I got my "carte de sejour" today!

Just one chest x-ray and several hours of my life spent in a waiting room populated by particularly annoying 20 & 21-year-old Americans studying abroad in Paris and I now have my carte de sejour!

Now, for the Frenchies- why the heck wasn't my visa enough since it says that I am allowed to be here until January 2013? I have to admit I'm not really understanding the difference between the visa and carte de sejour, especially since the dates for the carte de sejour are tied to the visa dates.

Also, only DH and I were called for this medical appointment today. Will DD be called eventually or should I have said something today? Or do children under a certain age need only a visa and not a carte de sejour? (I know, I know, I should ask our immigration lawyer.)

Re: I got my "carte de sejour" today!

  • My guess is that the process is similar to the Italian (sogiorno) process.  The deal with that is that a work visa (including a dependent spouse of someone employed) entitles you to enter; however, within 8-days of arrival you need to apply for the sogiorno permit, which authorizes you to actually stay (vice enter).

In Italy only those 12yrs and up need sojos.

If you fly out of Schaggen, you likely will be asked to present the sojo (sejour, I guess) after the visa's been initially stamped.  I've been asked for my solo in Madrid (re-returning Schaggen post-US) and in Munich (from the UK).

Interesting, thanks. Just in case, I will verify the age thing on the sejour if we decide to travel outside of Europe anytime this year.
