WWMND?

I need advice on what to do about something involved with my nursing program.

The person that you have to basically run everything through and ask any questions is ummm well a total b!tch. Today, I needed to ask her about something, so on my breaks and lunch I searched for her and I got the run around that she was out doing something and should return shortly, well I had to be in class. Right after class I ran to the office to catch her and she said it is 4 I am leaving sorry.  I asked anyway because its something I needed to know for Monday morning, I did not keep her from leaving and walked and asked my question. She told me no on what I asked and I asked why and the words out of her mouth was "Because I said so".  To me that is unprofessional and rude. I am not the only person who has a problem with her and her manners. And not the first time she has caused an issue for me.

My question is should I take it up with her, or go above her and tell her boss how she treats people? Or just leave it alone?

I pay to go to school, so I am the costumer right? I should feel like my hard earned money and time and effort into class can in turn get some respect back right?

Re: WWMND?

  • I can see how you felt she was rude. Does she prefer you to email her?

  • I don't understand. You think this chick is a b!tch because:

    1. she was busy working during your breaks

    2. she was off work and wanted to go home instead of standing there answering your questions off the clock?

If I was trying to leave and people kept asking me questions even though I told them I'm trying to go home (especially after what seemed like a long/busy day) I'd be short with them too.

And no, paying for school does not earn you respect.

I ... asked my question. She told me no on what I asked and I asked why and the words out of her mouth was "Because I said so".

this is not a valid response to anything professionally. If it was against policy or whatnot she should have stated as such and if she didn't have time right then she should have offered something else. I would send an email to her and cc whoever is above her stating you would like clarification on the policies for whatever you're asking, and I would mention that she said that somewhere in there i.e. "I just wanted to understand the situation ... Blah blah... When I asked X and you responded no, because I said so... What is the official policy" or whatever. But I would cc Hee superior, mention her response and your question. I would leave out your personal feelings/emotions about it and leave out other people's experiences. If its not resolved within protocol or she brushes you off, I'd directly contact the person above her, and deal with it from there. Document everything to make your case.

  • Yes she was unprofessional but so were you.  All of my college professors had office hours and explicit ways to contact them outside of class...I'm sure this woman is no different.  If it wasn't a life or death situation I would have followed protocol.

If she had given you this brush off even after you followed protocol then I would involve her superiors but I don't think it's necessary in this case.

What was the question? This could make a difference in my answers.

I don't think anyone gave you the run around.

Could you have called her and left her a message or emailed her?

You should ask her when she's not running out the door, she was probably irritated that you followed her out to ask her a question.

    You're a student, not a customer.

Pretty much all of this.  And I would need to know your question before I decided if her response was unprofessional.  If you asked for an extension on a paper or something like that as she was walking out the door then I can see her response being what it was.

    This.

My professors will not talk with me unless I schedule something with them. They have lives that don't revolve around students. Most of the time, they are busier than I am. It isn't fair of me to just expect them to talk to me.

However, if it bugs you that badly, take Jilly's advice and write an objective email to her and CC it to yourself and someone else in the department to get your answer.

What was the question? This could make a difference in my answers.

The question had to deal with taking a skills test (state certification) on Monday before she arrives at the school. I asked if I could have limited assistance while taking it because of my shoulder.  We do not know what skills (there will be 3) we will have that day and if one of mine envolved moving a patient I would need a second person, this person would not tell me what I need to do just assist in a lift or any other heavy lifting if that skill came up. She told me no and I aske why and got "Because I said so".

I don't think anyone gave you the run around.

People have been trying to get to her to get their questions answered all week, and it was not just myself. She is a student dodger and the other instructors will tell you that.   But if she needs something from you, she pulls you out of class.

I have also been trying to get an answer on some other issues/questions.  Like for the next portion of my program if I have to pay in District, or Out (that is a $2000 difference). I also need to know what other paperwork they need for the next portion (which envolves a point system).  The thing that really irked me is that she keep telling me that she had not recieved my HS transcripts and threatening to pull me from the program, so before class began yesterday, keeping in mind she does not show up till after 10am, I went in and asked and they have had it in my file since Jan.

Could you have called her and left her a message or emailed her?

No she does not allow the office to give out her email or number. There might be a rare occiasion where you might call the front office and she will pick up.

You should ask her when she's not running out the door, she was probably irritated that you followed her out to ask her a question.

I really had no other choice, I was told to ask her and she would not be in before my test started. And during all my breaks I went on the search for her, even during my lunch period 15min I was trying to find her.  So I had to sit and eat in the class.

    You're a student, not a customer.

Ok I am a student, but she should at least be nice to people.

She is not an instructor and does not have office hours, nor does she allow the front office to give out contact info. We are told to either find her, or leave a message (which never gets returned. The question I needed answered was very important and would have not otherwise been answered and I would have not been able to test. You can see the question above in my reply.    This person is supposed to be our go to person for questions, problems, and any issues, but half the time you get hateful answers, no answers, or rude b!tchiness.

Is it possible that by telling you if you could have another person you would be given advance knowledge of what your skills would be?   As in are there only 1 or 2 skills that would require a lift so if she said you could have it you would know the skill?

So what is she if she isn't an instructor?  Who hires her for this program?  Where would you even go to make a complaint about her?  If she truly is not doing what she is being hired to do (be there for your questions, etc.) and it is detrimental to your ability to succeed in this course, then you could file a complaint.  But unless you have proof or other people are willing to come forward then I don't know how much would happen.

If it were me and I truly thought that I was justified in my requests and done everything in my power to reach her, then I would file a complaint through the appropriate channels.  I would also start documenting all of your contact attempts and past ones that you specifically remember, as well as her response or lack thereof.  They might not do anything now but if you end up failing or getting a bad grade you may be able to use that to get a retest or something.

No, they do not even know what the skills will be. The state examiner comes in puts our names in her system and clicks a button and it gives her 3 skills.(we will all have different)  I would have just used the studen testing after me if I had a lifting or positioning skill.  They would be outside the room come in if I needed them. I would have to tell them what I needed them to do, then they would have gone right back outside.

It just irks me, because I am still limited in some range of motion in my arm and it became effident while doing clinicals but I was fine if I had a second person (which you should have anyway if transfering a non mobile resident/patient)   I have talked to my instructor and we are just going to ask the examiner and show her my scars (that are still fairly fresh) and go from there, if not I will just grit my teeth and get through it and take some strong pain pills later. (my instructor will prob step in and help if I struggle--we talked about this this morning)
