We are moving to France!

We are moving to France in August...  Please give any tips/advice you may have. We have 2 kids, hoping to do public school.

Re: We are moving to France!

  • Where? How long? How old are your kids?

For me public school really depends on their ages and how long you are staying.

  • No tips, but welcome! I'm an American livng in Spain with my Spanish H and about to relocate to Frankfurt. Hope to see more of you. I think Anna knows about schools in France as she just moved there and her dd is in public school. Like aliblly I think age matters a lot in this situation as well as how long you plan to be there. What is the reason for the move?

  • Hi! I'm in France (Paris) too *waves* Like Allibally asked, where are you moving, is it permanent, and how old are your kids? Do you speak French? If you don't speak French, my first tip would be to start learning at least the basics. If you do speak French, you are already one step ahead :)
  • Where are you moving? If it's Paris, public school registration through the Mairie (town hall) is this spring for September and you need to have proof of address and an up-to-date "carnet de sante" to do it. I'm sure some people can manage to scramble and get all of this together, but when we tried to do it in the fall for a January start date, it was a big fail. We ended up enrolling DD in a private school (but LadyMadrid- we did TRY to enroll her in a public school). It's French language, though, and she seems to be doing well picking it up when she didn't speak a word before we got here.

I am sure there's a way around the advance registration. I just wanted to warn you that you might have to jump through more bureaucratic hoops.

Feel free to PM me or page me on this board with more specific questions. We've been here just 2 months, but I was knee-deep in preparations for the move all fall.

  • Yay! Another France person!

Welcome, I live in the south of France with my H and 3.5 year old son. He is in his first year of kindergarten at a private school. The public system is generally good. Like the others, where are you moving to?

Feel free to ask anything about life in France, we've been here just over 3 years.

  • Bienvenue! :)

To echo everyone else, where are you moving to exactly? I've lived in France (Rennes) briefly as an exchange student back in high school. My hubby's family lives in/around Toulouse.

Looking forward to knowing all the details!

  • No advice, but I'm TOTALLY jealous that you are moving to France, haha!

I went to Nice, France on my honeymoon and it was an absolute delight! I can't wait to go back and hopefully look for a summer apt/house.

  • I wrote a longer reply, but The Nest ate it. Sad

So... Hi and welcome! I'm an American living in Norway.

My only experience in France was a short-term assignment in Paris many years ago, but I work for an originally-French company with lots of offices around France, and I've seen quite varied reactions from colleagues. I would suggest learning the language as soon as possible, and letting go of any romantic notions so that you're ready to deal with the less-pleasant aspects. It seems that the half of my colleagues who've loved moving to France were the ones who learned the language quickly and rolled with the punches, while those who had been waiting years for an opportunity to transfer there ended up being a lot of the ones who left after a year.
