Seattle

Hello ladies!

I'm heading to Seattle with my husband for 5 days...any must-see sights or favourite restaurants?  Weather looks rainy and miserable so indoor recommendatins are appreciated as well.

We're planning on spending time Pike Place, seeing an improv show, going to the Music Experience and Underground Seattle; and eating at Sitka and Spruce, the market (of course), and the Book Bindery.

Thanks :)

Re: Seattle

  • Don't worry too much about rain. It very rarely pours so much that it will drive you indoors (although last night was pretty hard). Good call on the Book Bindery -- I love the ambiance and the food and house wine are fantastic.

I personally wasn't so crazy about the Underground Tour. It just felt like we were wandering around dirty old basements. I did the Market Ghost Tour with my co-workers and it was actually really interesting because they mix in a lot of history of the Market.

If you have time and are interested, there's a Gauguin exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum right now that's supposed to be really good (it's a mix of his works and art from Polynesia that likely inspired him). I'm stoked because I think we're going to see it next week.

This is another fairly recent Seattle post with lots of good stuff.

  • Are you planning on spending all five days in Seattle? If not, I would recommend renting a car and exploring some of the areas beyond Seattle. You could head out to Woodinville and check out the wineries (Chateau Ste. Michelle gives free tours) and eat at Barking Frog.

You could also go north to Everett and do the tour at Boeing, which I found fascinating (you have to book in advance).

I would also recommend taking a ferry ride over to Bainbridge Island or take a ferry from Mukilteo and explore Whidbey Island, which has the cute historic towns of Langley and Coupeville.

Snoqualmie Falls is a beautiful waterfall that I always take out of town visitors to.

Within Seattle, check out the public library (amazing architecture and fun to walk around inside) and either go to the top of the Smith Tower or Columbia Tower for a great view of the city. Also, take a cab (or your rental car, if you get one) and head up to Kerry Park in Queen Anne. The view of the city from here is wonderful!

Within Pike Place market, my two favorite eateries are Cafe Campagne and Piroshky Piroshky.

Not sure of exactly when you are arriving, but Dine around Seattle is currently going on through March 29th (http://www.dinearoundseattle.org/) where you can get a 3 course meal for only $30 Sunday-Thursday evenings. Some of the restaurants also offer 3 course lunch meals for $30. We are actually going to check out Chez Shea tomorrow and Toulouse Petit later this month.

I wouldn't let the rain get in the way of your outdoor sightseeing; just plan accordingly and dress in layers and always bring an umbrella!
