Re: just scheduled my first spin class
Yes, you'll be sore afterward. Probably on either side of your buttcrack. Fortunately, the lady bits proper will not be sore.
My biggest tip for spin is to just keep your legs moving. Even if you have to roll all the way back to no resistance, go slow, or sit down when everyone else is standing, the most important part is to just keep moving.
Most of all, remember to relax (especially your shoulders - spinners tend to hunch up) and have fun! Enjoy the music, even if it's not necessarily your style, and just keep plugging along.
(oooh, a tip - if you can, try to get a seat where the fan or AC is blowing on you. My first spin class was fine, but the second one I got a different bike far away from the fans and I was miserable ... really really warm. I should disclaimer that I'm a bit of a sissy about being too hot, though.)
I love spin, and in general I hate working out. A good instructor with good music makes all the difference.
In addition to the other tips you've received, wear something wicking, as opposed to cotton, as you definitely will sweat. Bring water. And get assistance to set your bike up properly. My butt didn't hurt much even after my very first class, but it depends on the person, I suppose. If we spend a lot of time in the saddle in a class, though, my sit bones can get a little sore.
Arrive early to meet the instructor and get your bike set up. Bring a towel and water. Don't worry about what other people in the class are doing - it's your ride. No one will care if you back off the resistance, or sit when they're standing. It took a few classes until I was really comfortable standing for any period of time. Go as hard as you want to go and rest when you need to.
You can get padded briefs or boyshorts at REI to wear under your regular clothes if you don't want to wear cycling shorts/tights. You'll be sore, but not for long.
Also, give it more than one class before you decide you don't like it. I see so many one-and-done participants who might have liked it if they gave it a chance. It's a hard workout (if you make it so) but a good one. If you didn't care for the instructor, try another.
