Myrtle Beach

Hi all,

DH and I are planning a little get away in mid May of this year to Myrtle Beach, but would like to get some input on where to stay, which area is better then others. Most inportantly......How are the beaches???!!! Are they clean, I've heard mixed things about the beaches, some say they are clean, clear and nice, and some say it's murky.

Any suggestions and opinions would be great!! Thanks!!!!

Re: Myrtle Beach

  • If you can afford it, I highly recommend the Marriott Grand Dunes Resort and Spa. We own the Marriott timeshare next door and absolutely love the location and the beach. It is located away from the main drag in Myrtle Beach so it is quiet there. The beach in front of the two resorts is private so it never gets packed. We go to MB every year and think you will have a great time!

  • Ditto everything PP said above.  Love it there!   You can also rent individual rooms at the villas next door - kitchens, living room, bedrooms.
  •

thanks ladies!!! How are the beaches?!!!

  • The water isn't that pretty clear blue..... I have always found it to be clean and have always enjoyed Myrtle Beach. I just wonder how warm the water is there in May... I like my ocean nice and warm! lol

  • We recently had a weekend getaway in MB and stayed at Marina Inn in Grande Dunes. Their rooms are spacious and very pretty. They have both outdoor and indoor pools, hot tubs, gym and sauna. They also have a private beach so you won't be spending time with the crowded areas and they've got 2 gold courses(if you're into that). Also, their restaurant has great food, especially the breakfast items! We had a lovely stay there and plan on staying there again next time we visit MB!
  • We went to MB in May last year and it wasn't bad, but a little cool when the wind would blow. We still went to the beach and sunbathed, though. It was bike week when we went but it really wasn't that bad noise wise.  We stayed at the Hampton Inn, which isn't as pricey as other places, but it was nice. We ended up paying $119/night last year.  There were a lot of jellyfish on the beach in the morning, and the life guards went through and tossed them back in every morning. We walked on the beach with our coffee and then when it warmed up a little later, around lunch time, we would go to the beach and hang out. We did do some touristy things, also while we were there like Medieval Times and I made DH get an old timey photo taken.

  • Stick north of Myrtle Beach, Grande Dunes or north. I personally dislike Myrtle Beach because it is touristy and crowded and lots of drunk spring breakers/college kids. I love to go to North Myrtle or up by Grande Dunes because it is calmer, the beaches are nicer and there aren't as many stupid people. (Sorry if this is offensive to people, but after living here, I have grown to seriously dislike some of the things about Myrtle and appreciate NMB a little more)

May will be a good time, though traffic will be up because it is the start of our high season. The weather should be nice and warm most days, though if the wind kicks up it can be a bit chilly. I would go enjoy the beaches, but also Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing are fun to walk around and shop at. I also enjoy the putt putt places and there are a lot of great shows. You'll enjoy your time here.
