I would love some advice! How many calories?
I am trying to decide how many calories I should intake a day and I'm am having a tough time. I am on metformin for PCOS prescribed by my OBGYN. I have been trying a 1000-1200 calorie diet but I have been feeling so hungry! I also do about 30 minutes of cardio (just starting to exercise) and about 30 min of weight lifting/toning.
According to Myfitnesspal I should be eating about 1500 calories a day. Does this seem accurate?
I have more then 100lbs to loose and I am doing them in increments of 20lbs each.
Thank you!
Re: I would love some advice! How many calories?
You need to eat WAY more than 1000-1200 calories - you are starving yourself which isn't going to help you lose any weight.
Look for an online BMR calculator, thhen you can use the Harris Benedict formula to figure out the minimum you should eat each day. A 3500 calorie deficit per week equals a pound of weight loss, so 500 cal per day. Myfitnesspal is probably a reasonable number.
I've been doing weight watchers for a little over a year now and it's been very successful for me. It helps to figure out how much to eat for your weight as it changes. Others here have been successful with Myfitnesspal and other similar apps.
You should never go below 1200 calories.
Calculate your BMR:

Either add back in your exercise calories or calculate your calories with the harris benedict:
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/
Then determine a healthy deficit for weight loss.
Please eat more than 1000 -1200 calories a day. If you don't eat enough calories you won't be able to lose weight.
Have you sought recommendations on what to eat and your daily caloric intact from a specialist? It might help.
What is MFP?
I came up with 2095.8 for my BMR. Then I multiplied that by 1.55 because I plan on excerizing 3-5 times a week. I then came up with 3248.49. From the equation recommendations, subtracting 20% is roughly 2500 calories. Does this sound right?
I'm new to all of this, sorry
MyFitnessPal. Sorry, I thought you mentioned it, but it was the next poster.
Here's where I am calorie wise: My BMR is ~2000. I aim for 1700 calories a day. That's the sedentary BMR bc I have a desk job. I do add in calories for exercise, tracking using MFP. So if I burn 300 calories, I eat back those calories each day. I use a heart rate monitor during workouts to better approximate calories burned.
(My stats in case it's helpful: height - 5'7, weight - 233, age - 29. I actually probably need to recalculate my BMR; I try to do it every ~10lbs lost.)
That would give you a calorie deficit of ~750 per day or 5250/week which will give you a good rate of weight loss between 1-2lbs per week (which is the recommended rate). Just remember to re-calculate every once in a while as you lose b/c your BMR will go down. I reduce my calories by about 50 for every 10lbs I lose.
That could be accurate. When you are at a higher body weight, it takes more calories to maintain your weight. As you lose weight, you will need to recalculate your BMR and adjust your caloric intake down. I know some people recalculate their BMR every 15 pounds or so as they lose weight.
Not to be picky, but you LOSE weight. Also, it's exercising.
