Really? Do I need to move back to NYC for a decent hair color?

Sigh.

So maybe it was for the best that D cancelled tonight.  Just left the salon in a much less than happy mood. The color is nowhere NEAR what I asked for (for the record, I didn't ask for stripey highlights and lowlights - I specifically told her I DIDN'T want that); and because the colorist took so long doing it, my stylist didn't have time for me anymore so I have to go back tomorrow for the cut.

In re: color, here's the pic I showed the stylist of what I wanted:

And here are pics of what I got:

Even the manager grimaced when she saw it. Sad

Apparently they're going to fix it for free, but I'm really confused as to how it ended up like this. Is it just me, or does it look like she really screwed up the placement of the highlights / lowlights on this?

Re: Really? Do I need to move back to NYC for a decent hair color?

  • Thank goodness they are fixing it for free...hell they should give you the cut free - you have to go back? WTF!

I had a bad hair experience today too so I can commiserate. Can you get a rec from someone the next time you need services?

  • That is ridiculous! She really screwed this up. It shouldn't be that hard to go darker. And WTF to not being able to get the cut. The salon should have totally made sure that worked as it was their fault. I'm sorry. If I were you I'd call my girlfriend, grab some yummy food, some girly movies through on my comfiest jammies and have a girls night.
  • You guys would tell me if I was being crazy, right? If I was just imagining that it was messed up because I'd just had it done?

I'm going to go in tomorrow for the cut and tell them I want the color corrected, but I don't want to come off like a crazy banshee if I'm just imagining it...

  • you are not crazy. I would be ticked off
  • Yikes!  I know red can be a little tricky, but the red they used looks way to bright.  Glad they're going to fix it for you.

Absolutely! You are definitely not being crazy...while, the red might be ok for some people, its definitely not even close to the picture you showed them. I would demand that the cut is free as well as the fix on the color. I would really be pissed. Good luck getting them to correct their mistake!

  • In no way are you crazy. That color is no where near the same! Definitely demand they fix the color for free and like PP said, ask for a cut for free too. Then stay clear of that place! Good luck, keep us posted when they fix it. I'd love to see an after pic. :)
  • Just woke up, hoping that I'd think it would look better after a night of sleep, but nope. I feel like it looks even worse this morning. Sad

I'm really not sure how - after I showed her that picture, told her I either wanted a warmer blonde or warm red lowlights, told her I did NOT like the "stripey" look, and told her that I was scared to death of looking like a brunette - the colorist decided to put in stripey red lowlights that color, and DARK brunette lowlights (just found them this morning).

Seriously - this colorist has issues.

Also, you guys keep mentioning that I should cut the cut for free.  What if the cut is with another person? I feel bad screwing her over when she isn't the one who screwed things up. Can anyone tell me if me asking for that will hurt the stylist?

  • Honestly, their inabaility to properly schedule your services and stick to the timeframe is unacceptable. You could always tip the stylist very well even if you don't pay for the cut.

You could also ask for a discount on the service or a free GC to use for another time, but the you'd have to go back to that salon. I'd go for option 1 and just tip very well.

  • Ugh that sucks. I hope by now they've fixed it and you're happier. I know how frustrating it can be finding a new salon. I stalked women on the street on Boston and asked where they got their hair done when I first moved there. Post an update!

  • UPDATE:

    UPDATE:

Went back to the salon today, and had the color corrected. There's still a BIT of stripey-ness, but it's much less. Most of the red is toned down to a more strawberry color, we got rid of most of the brunette lowlights, and threw in a few more highlights to help blend more.

I didn't get the cut for free (didn't ask), but the stylist was pretty awesome so I'm okay with it. Didn't pay for the color correction (even though it took FOREVER), and got a free fifteen minute massage while waiting for the stylist to be ready.

Definitely don't think I'll be going back to the colorist (she was kind of snotty about the whole thing), but I DO like the stylist.

Here are pics of the new (and slightly less tragic) hair:

  • I really really like it! You have such pretty hair!!
  • Thanks MCC and Laurens.  I'm still getting used to it, but I think the red is a nice change. Smile
