or does anyone work at a hospital where they could ask about resources?
Shiit. I thought I had the answer to this before I went.
There's a donation centre in Banora Point, NSW, but they wrote back they don't take breastmilk from ppl w/ babies over 6 mo old. Weird, b/c there's such a demand for it in the US.
I found another in WA and Vic, but haven't contacted them yet - I was hoping for something closer to here since the shipping of milk is probably tougher w/ a hot climate like here.
(summary of why - i have flat nipples, had to use a nipple shield to feed baby, baby can't latch deep enough to stimulate milk prod, so I have to pump every 4 hours if I want to keep supply, and i have some extra every day which adds up quickly. I'm donating milk in the US and was hoping to donate the excess in the 2 months we're over instead of tossing ![]()
, but it's really filling up the ILs freezer already)
Re: random q - anyone donate breast milk in Oz?
I haven't heard of that at all here
you may want to check with the Australian Breastfeeding Assoc. (i think they have a free phone number) - they are SUPER helpful
and perhaps with a local early childhood centre - as they may be able to steer you in the right direction
GL!
If you are on facebook find the local facebook pages for Human Milk 4 Human Babies and/or Eats on Feets (I just checked and they have a few Australia chapters. You would be donating directly to a mom. You will need to like their page and then you can post to their wall that you have milk available during your stay there.
I am in CO and have donated close to 400 oz (total) to 2 different babies that way. I was really happy to be able to do that because I had way too much milk that I was not going to be able to use (After I was hospitalized 11 days post partum and had to give DD formula for 12 hours I was paranoid and wanted a stash) since DD is only in daycare 3 mornings a week and gets BF at home. The milkbank here has very strict guidelines. I had had a bloodtransfusion during that hospital stay so that eliminated me right away, but there were other things as well (neither you nor your baby can be on any meds).
I did get tested for HIV etc since I had had the blood transfusion and disclosed everything to the moms and offered them a copy of my lab results. Neither of them wanted it. They figured if I was feeding the milk to my baby it would be good enough for them as well
I heard about the HM4HB and eats on feets on the bump and was glad to have found that. On our local CO chapter there have been a few posts from out of state moms visiting CO and wanting to donate their milk. I guess it depends on how far people are willing to drive as I imagine in Australia that could be a bit tougher.
Good luck! I hope you will be able to find someone to donate to. It would be a real bummer if you had to toss it all.
yay! thanks! i got a taker through FB HM4HB
11L so far, will have more before we go.
I'll clean out the freezer this weekend, get it ready for more.
I really appreciate your responses, and thanks for pointing this one out. I'm so glad it's going to good use.
