Anyone in Japan?

I am considering a temporary (~6 month) assignment in Japan and am curious to hear any advice people have.  In particular, I'm curious about cultural difference vs. the US (have read a lot about hierarchy, saving face and lack of confrontation) as well as cost of living. I think my company would pay housing expenses directly but I would cover everything else and I want to make sure I structure my contract appropriately.  Really any thoughts are welcome.

  • We're in Japan, my husband is on a three year assignment.  The people and culture are amazing, IMO.  The people are very respectful and considerate.  I think for 6 months, it would be a blast!

  • I'm in Japan. Is your company paying you in yen or US dollars? if they're paying you in dollars, with the current exchange rate, it may not be to your advantage financially because the cost of living is high. Aside from that, I've had a guest or two have some complaints about the food and housing - no insulation,, lack of American air conditioning, small spaces - that kind of stuff. As for food, I think it depends on the person, for me it took some effort to develop a taste for Japanese food. I should say, if you have dietary restrictions at all it seems to be a difficult place. I know someone with Celiac's and the food options are much more limited than in the States. I don't have a job, so I don't know the work culture enough to give much input.
