One week away from AU/NZ with question!

Hey Ladies - We're leaving in one week and one day so today will be spent packing. So what is the weather like in Australia/New Zealand right now? I'm assuming mostly shorts/tank top weather? (we'll be in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Aukland, NZ)

Thanks much!

Re: One week away from AU/NZ with question!

  • It's so hot right now in Brisbane. I think it's technically fall/ autumn. But we only have a few real seasons hot and blazing hot. Shorts and tanks would be fine for the day. My flip flops are being over used right now.

I really hope you enjoy your time here!

  • Melbourne's weather is all over the place right now.  The average is low 70's for this time of year though.  Quite a bit of rain too, but it can change in an instant.  I'd bring at least one pair of jean and long sleeve shirt or sweater for the evening/early morning down here.

  • It's really been day by day here. We have been having tons of rain and flooding. Last Thursday was pretty cool and Friday was hot. There is really no way to tell what is going on so I would opt for layers. Also, NZ is usually hard to predict. We have been there in the middle of summer and absolutely froze (all the locals said it's normal because it just depends on what is going on in antarctica). So I would bring things where you can easily add to or take off.

I agree with Amy.  It's been crazy weather-wise around Melbourne.  Last weekend we had the heater on and were wearing coats and jackets and this weekend it's hot and humid and I have the A/C on.  Definitely plan to dress in layers, and a waterproof lightweight jacket wouldn't be a bad addition.  But in general, Melbourne is one of those places where "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes."

And on the whole, I have found Australia much less formal than the US.  Pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes, and a nice pair of comfortable flats and you'll be good for any occasion.

  • I'm on the south island of New Zealand and it's cold. Like 10-12 degrees C cold. It's quite a shock to someone who has new in KL'e 24x7 30 degree heat since July.
  • crazy weather on the east coast right now (we're about 4 hrs south of brisbane).  It's hot, then chilly, then hot.  Technically, it's autumn right now, but nothing like a Michigan autumn. I've worn long pants a few times, but mostly for the mozzies, not so much for the cold.  I think there was 1 chilly evening and 1 chilly morning that I wore pants vs shorts.

Oh, and I agree - much less formal than the US, though in cities, there are probably still places you'll like to dress up.  I always find my clothes from working/living in a city at home are way too dressy for the country town we're in over here.

Casual skirts are very common though, esp in the tropical areas. Take at least 1 pair of non-thong sandals, as some places/pubs in cities won't let you in w/ thongs (flip flops).  dh and I were kicked out of a pub on St Patty's in Adelaide about 10 yrs ago.  I went back in to let the Irish ppl we met know we had to ditch and they loaned us their shoes to get back in through the bouncers. lol.

    Have a wonderful trip!
