For those who've done C25K, please come in...

I'm trying to get into running (I've tried several times with no success). I currently do work out (cardio and strength training), but I love the flexibility of running out your door instead of driving 30 mins to get to my gym.

I don't wear a watch (do have an iphone and ipod shuffle), and I've tried a podcast before (can't remember which one, it's been so long) to tell me when to run/walk.

Is there a good podcast that can tell me when to walk/run, but I can customize my own music in b/w?

Or, any podcasts out there that you would recommend/have loved?

  • There is a couch to 5k app for the iphone, though it may be called ready to run now...

  • I used an app on my phone and streamed Pandora, worked well for me.

  • I'm using the "5K Runner" app on my iPhone. I get to listen to my own music and it breaks in and beeps to let me know to run/walk. (Only trick is keeping this app open 'on top' of other apps, or else it won't break through your music.)

  • I also used the C25K app for the iPod.  You could use your own music which was nice.  Good luck and enjoy!
  • My suggestion works for c25k but offers a lot more flexibility too: runkeeper.

The runkeeper app tracks all your runs, so you can look back at your previous workouts, see progress, etc.  While it's an app, it is also a website, so you can make route around your neighborhood to get an idea of how far you'll run from home before wanting to loop back or turn around. It uses your phone's gps to track your runs, so you can see both your times and distances.

To use it with c25k, program your own workouts. This is easy to do, but I'm sure you could google for help. Then the runkeeper app tells you when to run and walk while you listen to whatever you like- music, podcasts, or the sound of your own shoes.

My favorite part is that by programming a workout, runkeeper will show the results of your activity on the website, broken down by part of the workout. So say I walk at a 18:24 min/mile pace during my warm up, but them my first running interval is at 12:33 then a walk break at 17:49 then run at 12:58, etc. so you can see minute by minute and run by run pace info. ##sorry for bad formatting from iPad :-(##

Whoa! It looks like iPad can format now. How fun!

  • i'd say either do what believeinstephens said, or just use the c25k program that is from active.com.  i used that one, and it lets you choose what music to listen to during the workout.  then, when the voice-over comes in, your music just gets really low so you can hear the voice telling you to run or walk.

that said, once i finished c25k, i started using runkeeper, and one of the things i like most about it is that i can schedule it to have the voiceover come on as little or as much as i like.  (you can schedule it to come on every so often, like every 5 minutes, or every certain distance, like every half mile.)
