Tell me about the Eiffel Tower

I mean, I know what it is but it was a while since I've been there, and I hardly remember what I had for breakfast!
I keep reading about tours to the top and buying tickets, etc. What I want to know is, do you buy tickets in advance or wait til you are there? If in advance, where/how would I do that? Any other advice about the tower? I will be in Paris one day on arrival and one day leaving.
ETA: I did find THIS but would like some personal comments. TIA!
ETA(2): Apparently, there is nothing available on the days that we will be there.

We wanted to go at night so we just bought tickets for one of the last lifts, went to dinner, and then came back and got in line.

I was there last May. I stood in line for 2.5 hours to get tickets to go up to the top. I wish I had bought tickets earlier. But the line was tons shorter by the time I made it to the front of the line. I picked a bad time of day to show up -- plus some of the lifts were down, so it was just one elevator set running.
But not months earlier...just a couple of days earlier. You can buy them online.
You can buy them online 24+ hours in advance and I can't recommend it enough - it's the same cost, and since you pick a time slot, it makes it really easy to plan the rest of your day/night.
We went one night without pre-purchased tickets and the line was hours long. We decided not to wait, and bought tickets for the next night -- with the tickets, we were up to the top in less than 15 minutes and felt extremely smug at the gigantic line below
Or, you could climb up the towers of Notre Dame and see the city from that view point. It's free. And, you get to be up there when the bells ring. It's pretty amazing. DH and I did this in October, instead of the ET and we are glad we decided on it. Seeing the gargoyles up close is very cool. We waited in line for 1 1/2 hours...the line wraps around the side of the cathedral and since there is a fence there, you can sit down on a brick ledge. I'm pretty sure there is no where to sit waiting in line for the ET.
I've been to the top of Notre Dame; it is amazing!
The problem I am having is that I can't find tickets online, anywhere, except for HERE and they are sold out. I guess I am out of luck til next time!?!

We were there in late February 2010 and waited in line for about 20 minutes for tickets and then about 30 minutes for the lift. It was cold and 9:00 PM at night. The place was EMPTY!
We booked our tickets online and I kept watch on the site daily because they only seem to offer one month at a time and they seemed to sell out.
However, there are also walk-up tickets available in person, you'll just have to wait in the line. Assuming that you're going within the next month or so; you may beat tourist busy season and have minimal lines. My family went at the beginning of April last year and only had to wait in line 30 minutes. When SIL went in June, the line was 2.5 hours (both for just 2nd flr, not summit)
eta: What about Tour Montparnesse? It's about half the price, you can buy tix in advance and then you get the city view with Eiffel in it? (Note: I haven't been, but based on reviews, we bought tickets for this as well and plan on going up our first night in Paris)
