Shelf liner/paper?

Do you use shelf paper on all of your kitchen shelves?  Do you also line the drawers?  We moved into a house about a year ago and there was shelf/drawer liners in all drawers and on all shelves.  It's getting kind of yucky, so it either needs to be removed or replaced and I'm not sure if I should replace it or not.  Thoughts?

Re: Shelf liner/paper?

  • Our new home also had all shelf liner in the kitchen, which it was dirty and peeling off. When I removed the liner it peeled the paint off the pantry shelves, so I then cleaned the shelves and replaced with new liner. I ended up putting all new shelf liner in the kitchen cabinets also. It was a pain, but looks much better and cleaner. HTH.

  • When we bought our house, one of the first things I did was peel up any old shelf paper, thoroughly clean the shelves/drawers, and re-line them with crisp white non-stick shelf liner. In my case, though, the contact paper that was already there was peeling up in places, and when I pulled it back further -- there was a huge layer of dirt, dust, and even hair underneath. A previous owner had just slapped down contact paper over top of it instead of cleaning them. So gross!

According to my mother, the only shelves that really ought to be lined are ones holding cups/glasses/dishes. You know, because you might put a damp dish back in there and you don't want it to ruin the wood over time.

  • Contact paper is a huge PITA, but using them can sometimes pay off. If the cupboards are new and can be cleaned to your satisfaction, then I may skip the paper in most cupboards. It's just easier to periodically wipe them down.

When we moved into our house though, the cupboards were really nasty. We cleaned them  out the best we could, and even painted some of them, but I put down some paper too. I'm not so concerned with saving the cupboards as I am the cleanliness of the stuff I put in them.

  • Yes, we lined all of our drawers and cupboards with shelf liner when we built our house..  We bought it at Walmart, I think.  When we renovated a few years ago, we changed it again.

  • I probably only would if I lived in a rent place. I see no reason to use it in my own house. I don't put up wet dishes so I don't think that is a problem.
