Trying to get in shape

I am not the most active person but I really want to get in shape, the problem is I hate most sports. What are some fun ways to get in shape?

Re: Trying to get in shape

  • When I'm really not in the mood to work out, I dance.  As long as you have upbeat music and you keep moving, even without a video showing you steps you can definitely get your heart rate up and it's fun (as long as nobody is watching me, or even just with my kids, I really get crazy to make it more enjoyable).
  • Add more activity into your life. Try walking more places or even just walk around the neighborhood. You might want to look into a program like Couchto5K. I'm doing it now and really enjoying it. I know many of the people who post on this board have done it and highly recommend it.

If "sports" aren't really your thing, would you consider doing a program like 30 Day Shred, Insanity, P90X?

  • What's fun to me won't necessarily be fun to you.

    Try different things and experiment.

  • There isn't a secret answer, you just have to keep trying things until you find something that you enjoy.  Personally, I enjoy working out and I do a ton of different things during the week.  This week I went ice skating, ran, lifted weights, and did yoga.  Mixing it up helps me stay engaged and enjoy my workouts.

Start small, go on a walk or go to the pool.

How about hiking? It helps to take a dog- if you don't have one, borrow one.

There's also biking and paddling. Spring is a great time of year for outdoor recreation.

  • Making an assumption that you live in Brooklyn, NY, make like most New Yorkers and walk, walk, walk.

I agree with the others, try different things. What's fun to us, might not be fun for you.  Activity doesn't necessarily mean going to the gym. One of the fittest women I know is a yoga instructor who also hikes, bikes, and surfs.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
