Traveling while pregnant

Would you travel to Mexico, specifically to a resort in the Riviera Maya, while 21 weeks pregnant?

I have a trip scheduled with my parents, brother, and his family for about 5 nights at a resort in Mexico and am wondering if this is a good idea. My instinct is that it should be fine, but just wondering what others think. Thanks!

  • You'll be fine. We honeymooned there and loved it.

What I would be extra careful about is the water and what you eat. My husband brushed his teeth with the sink water, and was sick for days even after we got home (that was the first "I told you so!" moments in our marriage :). I think I got slightly food-poisoned when we ate at this tent place on the way to Chichen Itza (the women were hand-making tortillas and everything was cooked over a fire... I'm sure that if I was used to eating the food on a regular basis, it wouldn't have been a problem--I would do it again anyway, because it was super tasty and worth it!) I just had an upset stomach for a day or so, no biggie.

If you stick to the resort food and be careful about the water, you will be totally fine :) Have fun!

  • You should be fine, but I personally wouldn't be willing to go somewhere that didn't have the same standard of medical care as the US.

Everything was fine in my pregnancy until I woke up to unexplained bleeding one morning at 14 weeks (two days before were were supposed to leave for Hawaii)....I can't imagine how terrified I would have been if we couldn't just call the doctor up and go in for an ultrasound to find out that the baby was fine.  Had we been in Hawaii it would have been bad, but I know we still would have been able to walk into an ER and receive an ultrasound.  We still ended up canceling our trip as my doctor wanted me on bed rest until the bleeding stopped, which took 3 weeks.

I would not necessarily be concerned about the traveling/food part, but there are so many unexpected things that can happen in pregnancy and you just need to be comfortable with the kind of care you will be able to receive (my husband has a tendency to get sick/injured on trips and we have experienced some very questionable care while traveling).

Good luck with your decision...there is a 99.9% chance that everything would be fine if you did go...you just need to determine your comfort level.

  • As long as you're having a normal pregnancy it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you purchase travel insurance that would cover any pregnancy related complications overseas (your US health insurance most likely will not).

There is world class medical care to be had in Mexico. But it comes at a price (a price much cheaper than that in the US, but still more than you want to be paying out of pocket!). My husband's family members frequently travel from the US to Mexico for medical treatment (including an uncle who had a quadruple bypass in DF) because they can get a much better quality of care and more comfortable hospitals than their US insurance will provide!

I was not trying to imply that you cannot access great medical care in Mexico, but in an unplanned situation it is not as easy as finding the closest ER and walking in the door (or just calling up your doctor and going to the office).  My husband had to spend the night in a hospital in Mexico on a recent trip and lets just say it wasn't quite the same experience as a hospital here (and cost a few thousand dollars out of pocket just for an overnight stay).

  • I travelled to the Mayan Riviera at 13-14weeks pregnant and everything was just fine. I purchased additional health care insurance, and before i left i wrote down teh names of 2 hospitals in the area - with phone #s and addresses in case i needed them. My GP was thrilled I was travelling while pg and said that you can't be scared of every little thing that 'could' happen - pregnant or not!

I'd say go, but have good health insurance and let your OB or GP know where you're going. I'm sure they will give you the thumbs up. Have fun!

  • 2nd trimester is the perfect time to go. I actually felt my best in a bikini between 20-30 weeks pregnant then I have a pretty much any other time in my life (because the bump smooths out the fat- so instead of looking my usually slighty chunky self I looked like a thin person that was pregnant!) Have fun!

  • ask the resort if they filter the water. we go every december and i drink the tap water because i know it's safe. most do filter for tap, ice etc.. or everyone would be sick all the time. chances are the OP's DH got sick from something other than brusing his teeth. most get sick from drinking in the sun/eating foods they're not used to etc.. and there's always the ever-present germ tubes called airplanes :)

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

This reminds me that a cousin got really sick when she returned from her honeymoon in the DR an insisted it was because she once brushed her teeth wih tap water. Turned out she had e coli. That she acquired by swimming in a pond in her hometown ;)

  • You'll be fine.  Just only use bottled water to drink and brush your teeth (and keep your mouth shut in the shower) and only eat food at the resort or at chain restrarunts.  I would never eat the food offered on an excursion, etc.

DH and I went to St Thomas for our babymoon at 24 weeks pregnant and had a GREAT time!
