Antigua anyone?

I was thinking T&C but now I'm thinking Antigua (Sandals all-inclusive) may be cheaper.  It looks nice.  Anyone ever been and like to share their experience?  I am thinking just a 3 night stay for a mini vaca for just me and husband with no kids :)   As much as I would miss my little monsters.......

Re: Antigua anyone?

  • We love Sandals ( just got back from the Grande in St. Lucia yesterday ) that being said, do NOT go to the one in Antigua. We went last year and it was the worst Sandals of the three we have now been to. I wound up with food poisoning the second day in.

While on the bus back to the airport from the St. Lucia yesterday we spoke with two other couples who also went to the one in Antigua and had the same experiance I did. The original manager of Sandals was fired, a new one hired, he fired most of the staff, the staff is half Jamaican half antiguan and the two don't like each other ( or so we were told by the one couple we spoke to that has over 120 paid nights at Sandals resorts).

Antigua itself is a beautiful island and if/when we go back I can assure you we will not be staying at Sandals.

I do have a review and pics in the link above my siggy pic if you would like to check it out.

Ps, of the three we have been to the Grande in SL still gets my vote ( we've been there twice now).

  • We are not fans of Sandals at all, but we had a decent stay in Antigua.  Mostly b/c we were comped the trip for a really shiitty experience at another Sandals property so we didn't have to pay for our butler suite.  Not sure if you've been to a Sandals before or not, but our impression is that their resorts are over crowded, over priced, and only have so-so service.

With that said, I'd still pick Antigua, but look at Galley Bay.  We talked to several other couples in the airport who had stayed at Galley Bay and they raved and raved about the resort.

Antigua really is a beautiful island, very safe, and hundreds of gorgeous beaches to explore. If you're there over a Sunday, go out to Shirley Heights for some hiking and sunset.  They have a steel drum band and barbeque on Sunday nights.  It gets pretty crowded, but it's a lot of fun.

  • We went to Antigua for our honeymoon, and stayed at a resort near the Sandals (how bad is it that I can't remember the name!?). While I can't comment on Sandals, we really enjoyed Antigua. We liked the location a lot (beach was nice, but not packed), but also explored other parts of the island that were beautiful.

  • We went to Sandals Antigua last year and had such an amazing time that we already booked to go back! We never got food poisoning or had and other issues that pp stated. We had great service and loved all the food and activities! I definitely recommend Sandals in Antigua, however I have heard that St Lucia is better. Have fun and GL! :)
