OMG, Facebook (abortion related)

I just had an ad for abortion.com on Facebook.

1) There is such a website "to locate an abortion provider in your area"?

2) Why me?!  Because I haven't taken the bait on your "Becoming a mum?" ads?

Facebook ads perplex me.  For weeks now it's been giving me ads for Singapore, I think because DBF did a "check in" at Singapore airport and tagged me in the post.

Note/full disclosure: This is not a cleverly disguised ad for abortion.com and I am rabidly pro-choice.  I didn't get a chance to click on the ad before I navigated away but I totally will if I see it again, just out of curiosity.

  • Weird. For a second I thought you were going to tell me that you saw something on someone?s status update about abortions. Just never crossed my mind that FB would have advertising.

Did you click on the abortion poll thread? FB can track your clicks across the internet. They use double click and media innovation group to do it. I have nifty (free) software installed Ghostery that blocks all that rubbish. For example, there are 4 trackers on this nest page right now. I've got them all blocked - the super great bonus is that it makes the nest ads in the right column go away.

  • I knew I was being tracked, but I didn't know there was a way to stop it!  I will be looking into that neeps.

Turns out there are ads for everything.

  • I know we're always being tracked but that issue was SO small and short. There are other topics I spend WAY more time Googling/chatting about so it's weird that one came up. Or maybe Facebook sees I'm not married, figured out my age and assumed eventually...

haaahahaha. "Well this lady obviously doesn't want kids. Maybe she's one of those who uses abortion as BC. Let's give it a try."

And the tracking is scary. I didn't know FB did that and will now be checking into the software PP mentioned...

  • p.s. As I was making lunch I was wondering - a few years ago I was regularly looking at jihadist websites for research. What sort of ads would FB have given me for that? "All-inclusive vacation to the wilderness of Afghanistan! Special qualifications program included!"

  • Wow, that's all bit crazy.
