I'm a beginner runner so please bare with me. For the past week, my right foot has been hurting. It's hard to explain the pain but basically, it isn't unbearable and I can still walk and even run but it is extremely uncomfortable, to the point where I sometimes find myself limping. And I can't exactly pinpoint the area of pain either. It hurts, yet strangely feels better, when I arch my toes towards my knee, does that make sense?
Ugh, I'm so worried because I don't want to stop running. Should I wait it out or see a doctor and if so which kind? (Podiatrist or family physician?)
And I realize that this next part will get me scolded but I have been running with cheap Payless sneakers. I know, I know, fitted shoes. I'm going tomorrow (if possible) to get some. Do you guys think this is the cause of the pain?
Again, I'm a beginner so don't be too hard on me please. ![]()
Re: I think I have my first running injury. What to do?
The cheap shoes are probably the cause.
Rest for a few days, ice it, and don't run again until you get fitted for shoes.

when you pull your toes up towards your ankle, does it feel better because it stretches out that tightness in the arch of your foot?
Try rolling it over a frozen water bottle and see if that helps.

I would rest it and ice it and see how it feels after that. Then evaluate how you feel and weather or not you want to see a doctor. I would say an ortho or your primary doctor first. My podiatrist could not offer too much help, but maybe you'd have a better experience with one.
I would also suggest holding off on getting fitted for shoes if you are in pain and limp/can't run too well. I had to run to get fitted for mine and I don't think I could have done it and been fitted correctly if I was in pain and not running the way I normally would.
Yes, worded perfectly.
Thanks for your suggestion, sticking a water bottle in the freezer right now.

Didn't even cross my mind, thanks for reminding me.
Brie-I wasn't planning on it but now I'm going to give myself 2 rest days.
Thanks girls for your suggestions! Hopefully it'll get better asap!

That my friend, is plantar fascitis, something that is for most people, a direct result of poor fitting shoes. Try getting fitted for shoes in the later half of this week, and if it hurts to run when you try them on, give yourself some more time. But, the sooner you get in some better shoes, the sooner you'll start to feel better as well.
When my PF flares up, it's the fist sign that I need new shoes

Ugh, great. This is what I get for thinking I would be fine with wearing cheap shoes for awhile. As we speak, my foot is elevated and with the frozen water bottle.
I'm definitely not running without new shoes, that's for sure.
Thanks everyone for your help & advice!

I was diagnosed with PF a few months ago but my symptoms began long before I started running. Don't worry.
I went to a podiatrist and they were awesome. I got good stretches, a night brace, and a lot of information on how to correct it.
Good luck!
Joy2611-That's definitely good to know, thanks for the heads up,
Thankfully my foot feels a heck of a lot better this morning, not completely better but a big improvement. The ice must've done the trick!

Sounds like a plan to me. If you're still having problems after some rest and new shoes I would say maybe plantar fasciitis (?) I've never had it, but that's what your symptoms sound closest too. That would also need just icing, rest, stretching or rolling of the foot with a tennis ball, frozen bottle, etc. If it is PF, I know some ladies on this board would have good suggestions for you. GL!
EDIT - sorry, didn't read the other responses first. Sounds like I'm late to the discussion. Hope it feels better soon.
