How would you do this? 10mi run on a business trip

I have my next half on April 29th. My schedule calls for a 10 mile run the week before. The problem is I will be out of town for work. If I run on my trip it will be on a friday or sat morning pretty early, like 530am and I would be alone in the center of Philadelphia. Would you do that? Is it safe? If not what would you do instead? I think if I wait until Monday when I am home it's going to be too close to race day.

  • I'd do it on the gym treadmill, but I'm a fan of indoor running.

At most hotels, you can ask the concierge for a safe running route.  They usually have maps.

  • I think I would die if I had to do 10 miles on a treadmill. Okay, I'm being melodramatic, but I would really not like it. I can find route on mapmyrun, it's more of a concern about safety.

  • Can you do the 10 mile run before you leave on your business trip? That would let you have a slightly longer taper, which could be beneficial.

  • Have you checked out the Philadelphia running store websites for groups that meet early Saturday mornings? Philadelphia is big enough that somebody there has to be doing a group run that you could join!

Also, maybe ask on the local PA boards for recs for safe areas to run alone?

If I do that I would have a 9 mile run 14 days prior to the race, then a 10 mile run three days later, then the taper.  I don't know if I should do the two long runs so close, or if it matters. Or if I should just do the 10 miles two weeks before the race and taper from there.

  • I would do it on the gym treadmill too, but the treadmill doesn't bother me.

    THIS.

I know it'll suck but unless the concierge can give you safe, good route, I'd just suck it up.

  • I'd see if philly road runners has a group run or maps of routes.  I've had good luck finding good, safe routes on local running club websites.

  • I live (and run) in Philly, but I've never run that early in the morning so I really don't feel comfortable commenting on the safety at that hour.  I used to drive through Center City to my gym at 5:45am and often saw people out running.

Our big local running store is Philadelphia Runner. Check out their website (http://philadelphiarunner.com/) for information on running in Philly.  They do group runs, but they're in the evening.  However, I'd give them a call and tell them you'll be in town and ask if they can recommend a safe route or a running group.  There are lots of training groups for our local 10-miler in May - and maybe they could hook you up with one of them for at least some of your run.

That all being said, if I were to recommend a route from a Center City hotel, I'd make my way over to Walnut Street (which has lots of shops) and go west on Walnut (so the numbers go up) to Rittenhouse Square.  I'd go around the square (it adds a little mileage) and then continue up Locust Street until about 25th Street.  At 25th Street you'll see an entrance to a paved trail that goes along the river.  And I'd just go up the trail until my turn around point.  That's probably the most scenic route around.

Again, I've never been on the trail at 5:30.  It's very crowded by 7am, though, and since lots of people in Philly are training for the Broad Street Run, I'd imagine there would also be many early morning runners even earlier.  But give Philly Runner a call and/or ask your hotel concierge.

  • I don't know much about Philly, but I know I've run pretty early while staying in a few other big cities (Atlanta, Minneapolis) and been fine when asking for some safe routes.

With that said, I don't think Monday is too close to race day. If you've done several 1/2s before and are fairly comfortable with a 10 mile, I think you could do it Monday and be fine. If this is your first 1/2 and the 10 mile is your longest run, then I would maybe try to get it done sometimes (TM or outdoors) during the weekend.

Best of luck with the race!

  • I live in Philadelphia, and I have run outside at 5:30 am and have felt safe. A pp mentioned the Schuylkill river trail, which you could access from walnut, chestnut, or market street (it is accessible from other streets but you have to worry about the train blocking your way) and you could run your miles there. I run outside on this trail 4-5 days a week and feel safe, and at 5:30 am (especially on a Friday) you will probably see some other runners on this trail as well. You are more than welcome to send me a PM if you have any questions!
  • I think checking out the running groups and running stores would be an excellent idea, especially since you will be in a major city. I was out of town last summer for a wedding and had a 6 mile run planned. I was really stuck in the middle of nowhere along country roads and farms, no gym in the hotel or nearby. The hotel had no suggestions, so I ended up going to the local high school track. BORING to do 24 laps, but I got it in and I still felt better.
