Yoga Gloves?

I've been practicing yoga for about six weeks now in a class setting.  My hands sweat like crazy and I feel like I'm always about to face plant during downward dog.  My yoga instructor said that yoga gloves help some folks with sweaty palms. Has anyone tried them before? Any success?

Re: Yoga Gloves?

  • Is your mat new? I had that problem when I got a new mat, oh, around the beginning of January. It wasn't sticky enough (the mat gets stickier over time). I kept sliding all over the place. I brought a small towel to put at the top of the mat, and that was enough to help.

  • Yes, it's a new mat.  I'll try the towel idea.
  • I travel with yoga gloves/socks but it's only so I can have an in-room practice.

New or cheaper mats tend to be more slick. A teacher told me to throw my new mat in the wash machine (no soap and air dry). I have no idea why that works but my mat is awesome and I never feel like I'm slipping. I've also seen people use the towel or some studios will provide yoga chalk.

Same teacher warned me about yoga gloves. Not anything necessarily wrong with them, but according to her, it can end up being a crutch and make you kinda lazy about using your fingers, etc. and you end up with sore wrists.

  • My hands and feet get pretty sweaty during yoga. I use a yoga towel on my mat and that prevents me from slipping.  I also like the chalk, but it's so messy I only use it at home.

  • Yes, I'm also worried that I'm going to grow dependent on the gloves - I will throw my yoga mat in the washing machine AND take a towel to class.  Thanks so much for all the tips!
