Which Triathlon Leg?

I've been asked to do a team triathlon with some coworkers while I'm in Australia.  Should be fun.  They originally asked if I'd do the swim.  Except I don't have a suit or goggles.  I said I'd look at buying one.  But after looking online, it's going to cost over $100 for a suit and goggles.  They casually mentioned that if I couldn't find/get a suit, I could do the run (I have my running shoes here).

Should I just say I would rather do the run (a 5K - I've been running, and this shouldn't be a huge deal), or suck it up and pay for a suit/goggles and do the swim (500 meters, I haven't swam in about 6 months, but this should be no big deal).

I just hate to spend $100 on something I have at home and just didn't bring.

Re: Which Triathlon Leg?

  • Where were you looking online?  That seems really expensive for a bathing suit and goggles.  I know the pro suits are obviously more expensive, but I think you could find a cheaper one.  Did you try swimoutlet.com?  They have a ton of stuff on there and they have great prices.  I wouldn't worry about a fancy swimsuit just for one triathlon.

That being said though, I personally would do the run part b/c my swimming sucks arse ;)

  • Do you think you'll swim for training any more after this race?  My preference is always to run so I'd do the running leg because that's the gear I have.  I don't think I'd buy anything that I planned to only use once.  I certainly wouldn't spend $100 to do it.  If you think you may pick up swimming, that's different, of course.

I can't use swimoutlet.com because they don't ship to Australia.  Everything is more expensive here.  I should be able to get suit/goggles for less than $50 in the states, but here, it's going to be about $100.
