Best beaches in Kauai?

We are going to Kauai for the first time in June. We are near Hanamaulu (3 miles north of the airport).

Where are the best beaches? My husband wants to do nothing but sit on the beach and play in the ocean. :)

Thanks!

Re: Best beaches in Kauai?

  • Kalapaki Beach - right in front of the Kauai Marriott on Kalapaki Bay; very nice golden sand beach and safe for swimming.

Poipu Beach - beautiful huge beach, very popular.

Anini Beach - on the North Shore, smaller but very pretty, with clear calm blue water.

Tunnels Beach - on the North Shore, great beach to just sit and relax, beautiful mountain scenery.

  • My favorites are:

    Ke'e Beach.

Tunnels Beach (for snorkeling. Do yourself a favor and just pay the $10-20 to park on someone's property. The sand here is really deep and soft in the summer and if you have to walk a really long way through it, it's not so fun)

Hanalei Bay (not the BEST but easy parking and stunning surroundings, very calm in the summer)

Anini (but only if it's quiet...the water is always calm and it's good if you just want to chill somewhere quiet for the day. Don't bother on a weekend because lots of locals have big gatherings there) Beach.

We mostly stick to north shore beaches since that's where we stay. Lydgate on the east side and Poipu Beach Park on the south side are also very popular.

  • We just went to Anini beach park.

I found it absolutely beautiful, calm, quiet, my kind of beach.  But it's a park, away from services, so it's not the place to go if you want to rent lounge chairs and walk to a bar.  Just thought I'd put it out in contrast to the more popular locations.

  • My favs are Ke'e and Mahulepu.  Mahaulepu is totally off road and when both times we were there, we were the only ones on the beach.  There are also lithified sand dunes there which are really cool.
  • Thanks so much! My husband loves to body board (he has only been in the ocean a few times and acts like a little kid, so cute) so he wants to go to a beach where there is a bit of a tide coming in and out but its good to know about a variety since we'll be able to explore a different beach each day we are there!
  • We just got back from Kauai last week and I really liked Hanalei Bay.  Granted, it rained a lot while we were there, so I liked that beach the most because it was one of the only sunny days we had there, but it was still a nice beach, not too crowded.  We tried to go to Poipu Beach Park one day, but we couldn't even find parking it was so crowded.

You can easily hit a few beaches close to each other in the same day. We'll normally do that because we like different beaches for different things. For example, we'll go to Tunnels for snorkeling in the morning then grab some lunch and go to Anini to chill under the trees, read, and nap. We'll go back to the house/condo, clean up, grab some take-out, and go to Hanalei Bay for dinner on the beach at sunset. HIGHLY recommend going to Hanalei Bay for sunset. It's one of my absolute favorite things to do on Kauai. It will set by about 6 while you are there, so still plenty of time to go out to dinner afterwards if you want to do that.

Awww, you were here last week?  That was record breaking rain.  I think Hanalei got 9 inches in one day alone.

    Perfect! Thanks for the tip!
