Hiring a driver in Ireland?
I'm planning a trip to Ireland this summer, which I'm really excited about. We'll be staying in Galway and Dublin, making side trips from there. The only thing I'm unsure about with the trip is driving on the other side of the road, plus how narrow the roads apparently can be.
Has anyone hired a driver to cart them around the island? If so, who did you use? I think it could make the trip much more stress-free if we didn't have to worry about the driving.
Thanks in advance for any tips!
Re: Hiring a driver in Ireland?
The roads are narrow, but driving on the opposite side wasn't that hard to get used to. The only time I had a problem was in large parking lots that weren't striped, and my friend (who wasn't going to be driving) kept trying to get in the driver's seat, which became a big joke.
Driving myself around Ireland in the little rented red Nissan Micra was actually one of the highlights of the trip for me. Just avoid Conner Pass unless you are really brave, bring a GPS, and if necessary shell out for an automatic. (We paid the extra $$ for the auto because I don't drive standard, and my friend who does drive standard is a totally nervous driver who doesn't even like driving in the US and I didn't really want her to drive me around anyway.)
My husband and I visited Ireland last March and I was the driver. Honestly, I think it made it feel more like an adventure
I never pulled out onto the wrong side of the road - when you are on the other side of the car, it is a mental cue that things are different, you know? I really thought it was fine - I even drove Conner Pass! (and Healy Pass, which was amazing).
Like the PP, we also had a Nissan Micra - I wanted to the smallest car available! We got an auto, since that is all I can drive. I also brought my GPS (download the right maps before you go), but bring a good map too!
I encourage you to consider it - it is amazing what you can find when you wander on your own (and get lost!).
Conner Pass was a freaky drive because I totally wasn't expecting such a narrow ill-maintained road, but I consider it one of my big accomplishments of the trip.
We also rented a car and both DH and I were able to drive without a problem. I had only 1 minor freak out trying to park the car in a busy parking lot.,,,lol, other than that it was really easy and fun to explore on your own.
Haha - I feel the same way! Our B&B owner warned us, but we're gluttons for punishment, I guess
The view was phenomenal, but we never had good weather in Dingle so the pictures didn't reflect that. Oh well, more reason to go there again someday!
Yes! We hired a man named Kieran at Tour Dublin. I cannot say enough awesome things about him. He was amazing. He took us on an awesome tour and had some really interesting history info plus he really tailored the tour for what we wanted, went at the pace we wanted, and was just an all around nice guy. We did the Wicklow Tour but he'll pretty much do anything you ask of him.
