Need SPACE.

My fiance and I currently are both unemployed. He gets unemployment checks, I'm still a student (graduating in a week, woo!) so we pretty much are always in each others faces. He just seems so clingy, and it's always been that way but I think it's really starting to get to me now. He always wants to do everything I do. I read, he reads. I crochet, he crochets. I cook, he wants to help. I don't know how to tell him in a nice way that I want a little space. He's a sensitive guy and if he thinks I'm upset at him he'll get all quiet and pouty. I'm probably making it sound worse than it is; I'm PMSing. But seriously, I want some freaking space. Indifferent

  • What are either of you doing to get employed? Why is he unemployed?

He's looking for jobs. I'm going to find one as soon as I can, like I said I'm graduating next week.

  • The beauty of him doing everything you do, is you get a job, he gets a job.  Boom!  Spacetime!

March seems like an odd time to graduate. Anyway, I think grooms has the best idea.
  • Are you dating Bloomie's XH?
  • Usually people start looking before they graduate. Have you done that?

As far as your issue, use your words. You can say it nicely and all that, but tell him. He might not even realize he is doing that, especially because he's always been that way (which I'm guessing means not just when he's unemployed.)

Yeah... this list includes crocheting?  Fine, chalk this up to you both being home together too much.  But seriously.... is this a guy you really want to spend the rest of your life with?  He wants to do EVERYTHING you do.  EVERYTHING.

I'd actually guess that once you're both working and your free time is more limited and precious, his need to do 'everything' w/ you might actually become even more suffocating.

  • Does he have his own hobbies? Maybe encourage him to pursue some things he is interested in. Does he have any friends to hang out with for a guys' night? I do think it is odd that he just wants to do whatever your doing even if it doesn't seem like something a guy would really be interested in.

Do you want him out of the house or just doing something else not with you? Like, I will be doing some hobby of mine and H may be messing around on the computer or playing video games, and I consider that to be alone time of a sort. We are obviously both in the same place, but we are doing our own thing. Is that something that you would want if for some reason he doesn't want to get out and do something?

I don't think there is anything wrong with telling him you would like a little alone time. That is healthy and normal for couples. Talk to him about it during a time when you are calm and not ready to scream "You're smothering me!!!!!!"

    Oh for Pete's sake.

OP - can you find some activities to do outside of the home?  Book club with girlfriends?  Free community ed classes?

  • just yell "STOP COPYING ME!" and run away and hide. it used to work with my little sister.

    no?

  • really though, I would just tell him that I need a little more alone time. It might hurt his feelings but you should be able to talk about things like this that bothers you, if you can't then you have worse problems than just him following you around all the time.

Go join a yoga class or something and if he wants to join let him know that "I'm sorry but I really need this to be MY thing" and encourage him to get his own hobby.

Thwapping him in the nose with a newspaper might also help.

  • The spray bottle or can with pennies seem to do the trick too.
  • Hmmm he copys everything you do... Lets see how committed he is. Go find a strange man to have sex with. If your H does the same report back to us immediately!
