Arch pain that isn't plantar fac?

Ugh.  Something really strange is going on with my foot.  I've been running for years and doing the same yoga practice for years, and a few weeks ago I started getting a random, intermittent pain in the arch of my foot, in a specific spot, about an inch back from my big toe.  Ice, rested, etc for a week, and just in walking around, living my life, taking care of my kids (no yoga, no running) it's gotten to the point where it's constant, even at rest, I'm limping and taking ibuprofen daily.

I've googled the heck out of arch pain, and PF always comes up, but I really don't think that's what's going on, since I don't have heel pain, it's not worse in the am, and it is really localized.  Any other ideas?  I'm headed to a podiatrist on Monday bc this is so frustrating!  Would you keep icing?  Stretch, maybe?

Re: Arch pain that isn't plantar fac?

  • I had this same thing, except mine went from my heel to my toes. I suspected PF but I went and saw a sports med doc. He said it wasn't my PF, but a tendon that runs along the same path. I forget the name of it, but he gave me some stretches, recommended rolling it on a frozen water bottle after all of my runs and foam rolling my calves because he suspects calf tightness was the root of it all. Hope your podiatrist can help you out! Good luck!

  • I have pain almost exactly like what you're describing (although while running it tends to move toward the heel (but only makes it about mid-arch).  I went to the podiatrist about it last week and he says it's PF. :(  It doesn't have to be be heel pain or only worse in the morning, those are just the "classic" symptoms.  GL at your appointment!
