DS needs a break and so do I

DS is 3.5 and still is not potty trained. We are taking him to the potty like we should and he goes every time and cannot hold his bladder between trips. I finally took him to a Urologist. He thought it was a combo of his ADHD or a small bladder. He had us measure how much he releases when he goes then report back in 3 weeks. We went Friday for a follow up and apparently he is suppose to hold 5 oz every 2-3 hours whereas DS is only getting about .5 oz to an ounce. From where he had surgery as a baby it weakened his bladder causing it to spasm. Now he's on medicine to relax it to see if it helps. I've noticed he is releasing more and less in his pull up so thats good. If there isn't a huge amount of change by April, he will have to be placed under sedation and have a cystogram.

Then Sunday due to the time change DS falls asleep at 7pm only to wake up at 10:30pm and would not fall back asleep until 3am when we had to be up by 7am. I dropped him off at daycare half asleep, crying hysterically and would not let me go. This caused me to cry myself to work because of how upset and tired he was since it intern made me feel guilty placing him through that instead of staying home.

Finally to top that off last night around 3 am he wakes up sneezing. I didn't think much about it. After I woke up and went to the bathroom I realized I had started but only just then nothing on me. But then when I was getting DS dressed I noticed blood all over the sheets. At first I was confused because I didn't have anything on me from starting so how could it be on the sheets. Then I realized that DS had had a massive nose bleed and when he sneezed at 3 am it blew blood all over the bed. Really!! Something has to give. My poor little guy.

  • You know, I just read an article on Slate about children who are potty trained but still have accidents in between. It had to do with them being constipated (despite having normal BM). Anyway, it talked about how it's an often overlooked cause of bladder problems. Obviously, you should take the advice of your urologist, but the article still may be worth reading.

Thanks. His more than just having accidents. He can fully empty his bladder but then dribbles with 5 mins of using the bathroom. He dribbles all day long which the urologist things is steming from his bladder contracting every time his body naturally tries to hold it.

I figured it probably wasn't related, but thought I'd still pass it on anyway. I hope things start improving for him soon!

  • I don't know if this is helpful or not, but one of the children I used to care for had this problem.  His doctor ended up putting him on a very low dose medication that helps with the lower urinary tract.  It is the same med you can find over the counter for adults called Cystex (and one other name for it).  It was designed to be a lower urinary tract pain reliever when a person has a UTI, but the positive side effect of it is, it stops the spasms from occuring, the spasms are what make you think you have to go all the time.  It sounds like you are way on top of things with your son, but maybe it is something you can mention to your doctor as something that could help with the problem.  I believe the generic name of the drug is pantoprozol.  Once the boy I nannied for started taking that it made potty training a breeze.  The med has been around forever and from everything I've read about it, it is safe for children.

As for the bloody nose, have you tried putting a humidifier in his room?  Sorry you are going through this, it sounds incredibly frustrating, I hope things start heading down the right path soon.
