I think it's still going to be awhile before I make up my mind on what I want to do but I just want to hear your opinions on why you bought: New/Used/Lease...
I don't think lease is an option because I want to own my car but I'm still interested in hearing why it was right for you.

Re: Lets talk about cars!
I thoguht this said cats at first and was excited.
I have a 2003 Ford Ranger. Usually I say I got it in the divorce (my dad and his wife divorced right around my college graduation, so he just gave it to me since I'd been driving it for a couple years anyway).
I like owning it. Dad leases his cars and it always seemed like a pain, having to worry about going over the allotted mileage, getting a new car every so often and figuring it all out. I guess I like being comfortable with just my truck. Plus it's paid off so I'm hoping it lasts forever and ever.
It only made sense to buy one for me since I keep cars until they are falling apart or useless (or totalled, in the case of my first two cars). My car is now paid off and I don't have a note and it's lovely! Also, I got a sweet deal that I couldn't pass up because it was purchased from corporate headquarters here from "someone who knows someone" and I actually got it for almost $6,000 less than the sticker price would have been on the sales lot. I didn't even have to haggle or negotiate, he sold it to me at the same cost they sell wholesale to the dealer so it was a total Win-Win for me.
I don't really get the point of leasing (when it comes to cars, I understand houses/apts). If you are gonna pay several hundred dollars a month on something (between the cost of using it, insurance to drive it, gas to burn, etc), you might as well own something at the end of it.
My car. . .
My family and friends laugh because I have had the same car since 2003. It still runs good and it is great on gas. I am not too concerned about appearance so the car has a few dents and is beginning to rust a little. My 1999 Ford Escort is named "Essie" because she is a feisty old lady who still holds her own. (lol)
The reason for keeping her so long? My father bought the car up front so I am too poor at this moment to get another car there is sentimental value in Essie. Would I lease? Not too sure. It would be nice to get a brand new car and the city I live in you really don't need a car so leasing is an option.
To what I hear, used car costs are rising and new cars are not being bought because of the economic status of Americans. Case and point: the Chevy Bolt has had poor sales. They are actually going to stop making the cars for a year or two which means loss of jobs.
(wow, this was a long post!)
I own four cars at the moment, all for different reasons.
My daily driver is a 2004 Jetta. I bought it "used" but it was never titled (it was a demo car for the dealership, so it had only 1000 miles on it, but I paid the used price). I picked that car because I love the way it drives and it had all the bells and whistles I wanted (turbo, sunroof, upgraded stereo), but I could afford to pay it off quickly, which I did. I plan to keep this car till it dies.
MH and I co-own a 2012 Golf turbo diesel as MH's commuter car. We picked that one because we love how it drives, and it gets 45+ miles to the gallon. MH does a ton of driving for work, so we needed something very fuel efficient, but still fun. We bought it new because the newest models get the best milage, and because MH really customized all the extras (tracking headlights, wireless syncing, etc.)
I also own a 1994 Mazda Rx-7. This is our fun car. We only drive it during the warmer months and for longer distances (the twin-turbo Wankel engine doesn't like short trips). No reason for this car other than I absolutely love driving it. It's a gas hog and totally impractical. The joy of being a DINK!
We also own a 1997 Honda Accord with 280K miles on it. This is our junker. It was MH's car since college and it has not been babied, but it still runs great. We use it for hauling mulch and as a back-up for when either of our cars is in the shop. MH is planning on selling it for cheap to a coworker's son when he graduates highschool in May.
The papers on my loan indicated the car as "Used", it was a courtesy car for one of the corporate dudes when his shoulder was broken. It had less than 500 miles on it and was only driven by him and his wife.
I'd check out demo/test-drive cars because they sell them in a "used" status but they are practically brand new since they were never really pre-owned.
I have had a used car and a new car, and I can say nothing beats the feeling of driving a brand new one with paper tags off the lot but in all honesty it DOES start depreciating in value the minute you hit the road! I could go either way on used/new, so long as you are getting a good deal either way.
I have a used 2006 Ford Focus. It actually has a salvaged title because I bought it from someone who basically re-creates totalled cars. Having a salvaged title means it would probably be difficult to sell it if I tried, but I'm not planning to do so anytime soon. He (Sir Georgio) has just over 40K miles on him, and I plan on keeping him around until he dies.
2 years ago, when I bought my car, I was working at a credit union so I got a good deal on my loan - I only pay $87/month and the loan is for 5 or 7 years (I don't remember?) but I plan to pay it off by the end of this year (hopefully, future job depending).
I do not think I would ever lease simply because I do not see the point. My parents used to do it and it was cool getting new cars every couple years but I never really understood it.
Agreed! I got my car for $5K less than new even though it had never been sold.
We lease because we use them as a tax write off for our businesses. Plus, you usually need a smaller downpayment and we like having a new car every 3 years. We have no interest in buying a car and keeping it for 15 years.
I am paying off my 2006 Nissan Frontier (which I bought new) and I know that I could never do a lease. This car is the one that we use on the weekends, to transport the dog anywhere, and on long trips. I put probably close to 17k miles on it per year.
My husband owns both the 1994 Firebird (which just hit 100k...) and his 2003 Subaru WRX (just hit 45k...)
So if we ever got a lease, because of miles alone, it would be his car. Though he likes to mod cars as well, so he probably couldn't because he likes tinkering with them and changing them, which you can't really do on a lease.
So, I'm not car savvy. Would they be at the dealership or a private seller?
We have 3 vehicles at the moment.
My car is a Mercedes SUV that I bought while I was working at the car dealership. I got a phenomenal deal because the people traded it in because they couldn't afford it anymore. Since I worked there, they gave it to me at the price they paid for it.
MH drives a BMW 135i. He just got it after driving his old truck since 2003. We decided to get him something more fuel efficient because he was wasting the BMW's car payment in gas a month!
We still have his truck. It's going to be SS's truck once he starts driving this summer. It's in really good condition. We are the only owners and MH has taken very good care of it.
We own all of our vehicles. I typically get a new car ever few years, but honestly, I really really like my car and see myself driving it until it dies.
MH wants to drive his car until SS goes off to college at which time, he'll give him the BMW
They are at the dealership. The GMs and some sales managers have use of the vehicles as "Demo's" or Demonstration Vehicles. That way they are always driving the product they are selling.
They switch out before they hit X amount of miles and put the vehicle back on the lot and switch to another one.
Almost all dealerships will sell their demo cars, I would call a few and inquire about which test drive vehicles they are going to list for sale, becuase they won't have all models or all makes. They only sell them after so many miles on it.... and you won't get your choice of color or upgrades or anything, but it's a much cheaper price tag if you aren't picky about all that stuff.
At the dealership.
I love our 3 daily drivers.
Our 2000 Chevy Tahoe is practical. H made it where he gets good gas mileage. We just finished paying back his gma (who bought it for H outright so he could own it). It seats 5 and can haul stuff. It's never hauled a trailer before and it never will.
Our 1994 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 is what we use to haul things. H fixed it so the AC works. Its practical. It hauls crap. It tows stuff. Its our throw around truck and it runs on waste oil.
My 2007 Ford Focus is what I drive every day. I drive it 140 miles on average a day so it works for me. It's small, compact and fuel efficient. Ford has been impressing me lately with their new cars. Its lasted me 119,000 miles so far and I'm going to need it for a while.
I would never lease a car. If I'm paying for it, I wanna eventually own it. I would hate to pay and pay and pay then have to give it up. I'll never lease and if I want to own a new car, I need to get a good paying job to buy my Mustang
We base our taste in cars entirely on price, repair costs, and gas mileage. We drive a lot and have to be as practical as possible. That being said, we both lucked out and love our cars.
I drive a 2007 Toyota Yaris. IMO, it's cute, zippy, and gets killer mpg without being a deisel or hybrid. It's cheap to maintain, too. It looks tiny, but my 6-foot-tall husband has no problem driving it or sitting in it for long periods.
D drives a 2004 (?) Chevy Cavaleir. It was a car of necessity. His old Exploder died a sad, painful death, and I had to take him to/from work for about 6 months, which was a PITA since we work opposite schedules. We happened to hear about a car sale while driving to a friend's play one night and decided to stop in. We got the car for $99/month and only $1,000 down! He really loves it because it's practical but juuuuuust sporty enough to be fun for him to drive. Plus, I don't have to cart his butt around anymore.
We've always owned our vehicles but decided to lease our first car this past weekend. I just needed a commuter car and since most of the time I bike to work, we weren't worried about going over the mileage. We got a 2012 VW Golf and I love it so far. I've never seen the point in leasing until I started doing my research and it actually made sense to me and us in our current situation. I also am loving the idea of having a brand new car every 3 years, not having to pay for maintenance, etc. We can afford to always have a car payment, so that's not a big deal. I don't need to own a car for 10 plus years anymore.
We do own a 2010 Rav 4 and I love it- we take it to the mountains for camping/skiing/hiking, etc so we need at least one car that we own for high mileage.
My most recent car and the one we own now is a 2009 black Ford Focus SES. We bought it used in 2010.
We're not big car fans and usually don't care too much as long as it's dependable, spacious, gets good gas mileage, and looks decent. The 4-door Focus meets all these requirements and the small size but spacious enough inside is perfect for us.
Some other cars we looked into that were somewhat similar were a Toyota Prius, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Civic. We briefly considered a Ford Fusion also, but it's slightly bigger than we wanted and the gas mileage wasn't as good. We went with a Ford Focus because it was the best deal we could find, Ford has greatly improved and been making better vehicles in the last few years.
My car is a Dodge Neon. I love my little car.
The new car is a Mazda 3. In the 3 days I was able to drive it, I really liked it.
