Asthma - suggestions?

I'm highly active and was just diagnosed with asthma two months ago (I had always attributed not being able to breath to being out of shape. LOL) I thought they were going to say it was excercise-induced, but it's more then that. So they put me on a inhaler and nasal spray twice a day. That was giving me thrash, which was miserable. They switched me last week to some type of pill. I just did my cardio work out and with the humidity outside, it didn't work at all.

My question to asthma friends, have you found any natural help? My body is not use to taking medications, I never do it, and I think that's why it had such a drastic side effects.

Any suggestions would be fabulous!!

  • Thrash?

I have asthma and have run a marathon.  Medication is a good thing.  It's possible that you haven't nailed down the right combination for you yet, which will take some time and experimentation.  You may also have allergies that contribute, which will require a different kind of medication.  Also, keep in mind that if you were just switched to a new medication, it may take awhile to build up in your system and become effective.  Give it more than a week.

What works for me is Advair, Zyrtec, and an albuterol rescue inhaler.  I also avoid working out in very cold or very humid climates because I know they are triggers.

  • I hate taking medications as well but in the case of my asthma I just don't have a choice.  I take Advair once a day for my asthma (twice during peak allergy season) and it really helps a lot.  No adverse symptoms at all.  There are a couple of different dosages they offer it in.

Never in a million years would I ever take a nasal spray.  I hate them.  What exactly was the nasal spray?  I've never heard of one for Asthma, so was it actually for allergies?

Allergies and weather conditions are a big time trigger for asthma attacks and sometimes you might just have to change your routine.  During peak allergy season I either have to workout indoors or load up on allergy meds, and be prepared to have to take my rescue inhaler.  When its humid, or really cold out I take my work outs indoors as well.  I can't run outside when people are burning wood in their woodstoves because that's a trigger for me.  You'll learn your triggers and the ways to avoid them.

I don't really know of any natural remedies, sorry.  I would just suggest to keep trying different meds to figure out what works best for you.

  • Yeah, I have a feeling figuring out the breathing treatments are just going to take a while. I'm on this pill for a month and will go back to the doctor and see how this works.

Supposedly the nasal spray was for asthma and to help the drainage, I agree, never heard of it. I did a full out allergy testing, about 60 shots, and came up I didn't have a reaction to anything.

Thrash usually effects babys but was a side effect of this medication. It quite literally felt like intense strept throat, so bad it caused me to loose my voice the entire two weeks I was on it.

  • I assume you mean thrush.  I take pulmicort every day which has a thrush warning with it.  It's an inhaler so I make sure to wash my mouth out thoroughly after I use it.  I've never had a problem with thrush.

I don't know of anything natural for asthma.  I think the most important thing is to get on a good preventative.  I also make sure to use my albuterol inhaler before I work out.

  • Yeah, you mean thrush.

I also take advair.  And I have proventil for rescue.  Often times cardio helps me.

this morning at the beginning of my workout I felt really tight and constricted but my airways were totally open by the end, I just have to work really hard on regulating my breathing or it can get out of control.  But, I've had asthma my whole life and have had a lot of experience with trying to figure it out

  • Singulair, which is probably what you're on, sometimes takes awhile to build up in your system for maximum effectiveness. My DH has asthma and took Singulair for a few months. It really affected his moods, and it is known to cause mood swings in people who take it. He was nearly unbearable to live with and I read some article about Singulair and the lightbulb went off. He went off it immediately. My DH takes Advair 1x/day b/c it raises his heart rate too much to take it the 2x/day as recommended. He's never had thrush even though it is a common concern with the inhaled medicines. He also uses Proventil as needed and a nasal spray, I think Flonase.

Asthma is a condition that a lot of people can manage, but if you don't have proper treatment and medicine available in an emergency, you can die. I wouldn't be taking any chances by going "natural".

  • Do you consume a lot of dairy or drink milk?  If so, it can contribute to asthma and/or allergies.  Try cutting it out and see how you feel.

I know many people think we need milk for calcium but you can get it from many other forms that are more easily absorbed by the body (almonds, vegetables, sesame seeds etc)
