Lung question

Any ideas on how to make your lungs stronger? I will admit on slacking a bit. For the most part I run at the gym and am ok. Today I ran outside and my lungs hurt sooooo bad. I had to stop. It wasn't that cold out (for So Cali). Will it just come with time and more experience?

Re: Lung question

  • Do you feel like you're in real pain, or is it more like your mind is causing it? What I mean is ... when I first went from running on the treadmill to going outside, I really struggled. I wondered how I could have the endurance to do several miles on the treadmill, but couldn't do the same distance outside. For me, it had something to do with the conditions. As soon as I was faced with some wind, I felt like I was out of breath and wanted to stop. I eventually got over it. It just took some practice.
  • I asked this question on FB once because it's the same with me - my biggest struggle with running is breathing.  I don't get physically tired (like my legs etc) I just get to a point where I am breathing SUPER heavily and it's the most challenging part for me.

What I got from people is that your lungs are also like muscles in the sense that they're not that strong and they need to be "exercised" regularly and they will get better with capacity.

I can run at least a mile or more before my breathing starts to get really uncomfortable, but when I first started running, it wasn't more than a minute or two before I was gasping.  Now, whenever I get to that point I just walk for a couple minutes to catch my breath and then start running again until I can't stand it anymore.  These intervals I think are what help the most.
