Sleeping with DH..

Does anybody else have trouble sleeping with DH?  When I mean sleeping, I mean eyes closed sleeping. Wink

I am the LIGHTEST sleeper, anything can wake me up.  From rain to the hum of the ceiling fan and when my husband snores, it vibrates the bed and I can NOT sleep.

I usually end up on the couch and don't hold it against him because it is NOT his fault at all.  He understands, but would rather me be in bed with him.

I have a fan that I use for noise at night, but nothing takes away the snores.

Any suggestions?  Anybody else in that boat?

Re: Sleeping with DH..

  • I am not in that boat - I have slept through trains, thunderstorms, barking dog, etc. etc. Lucky me! But my MIL and FIL sleep in separate rooms for this very reason. When they are on trips and have to share a room she sleeps with soundproof headphones on and says it works. It may be uncomfortable but I guess you could get used to it??

Also maybe he should consider doing a sleep study thing. He could have sleep apnea which is causing him to snore and I think there's some stuff they can do to help alleviate that. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I've heard that!

  • Thanks!  I've tried ear plugs - they gave me an ear infection, so maybe sound proof headphones would be the best.  I barely sleep on vacations because of it.

  • I was going to suggest ear plugs....but I see those don't work for you.  When I first started staying over his place, I used to have trouble sleeping because of his snoring.  Earplugs helped, but they were uncomfortable.  Now, I'm honestly just used to it, and we are both good sleepers.

Our troubles were more about hogging space and covers, and now that we have a King bed, it's MUCH better.

  • Yes I have that issue too. I am a light sleeper but I also don't sleep soundly through the night even the most perfect conditions (ie alone and with the room at the perfect temperature)
  • My DH has sleep apnea and before he got tested and treated, he snored terribly!  He now has to wear a CPAP machine every night.  It has a noise to it (air flowing), which I find relaxing. DH's snores are pretty much gone...and if he makes any noises they are muffled or hardly anything to worry about. Once we went up to CT to visit his parents and he forgot his CPAP back in PA...it was the longest trip we've ever taken...it was so awful sleeping next to him, plus he couldn't hardly sleep because he was not getting enough oxygen etc.  It would be good for your DH to get checked...sleep apnea can cause a TON of health related issues.

  • yeah Sami makes this strange noises when he's on his back - so I usually just give him a small push and he knows to roll over - I'm also a fairly light sleeper.  but my biggest issue lately is with Shelby!  She snores really loud!  BUT if i nudge (hmph sometimes it's more like a kick...) her w/ my foot she'll jump off the bed in a huff (literally, it's quite amusing) - annoying but i can typically fall back asleep...

  • Yep I find myself on the a couple times a month for DH's snoring - I just can't take it on certain nights. He gets upset when he wakes in the morning and finds me there, but it is what it is - even with breathe rights he is still fairly loud depending on how he's fallen asleep...and you know that whole mantra about waking a sleeping grizzly...I just don't go there and move to the couch.

  • Fortunately, DH doesn't snore (except when he has a cold).  My dad snores horribly though and when we went on family vacations I never got much sleep as I'm typically a light sleeper too.  If YH isn't willing to go to the doctor to get checked for sleep apena, has he tried using a Breathe Right strip or something?

  • DH doesn't snore unless he's in the perfect position and even then its unusual....he does chomp/grind his teeth....THE WORST!! He had a mouth guard for a while then lost it can't convince him to get back to the dentist. UGH!

I could have written this myself. DH lost his mouth guard like 6 months ago and had the nerve to blame the poor dog. I'm sorry the dog chews on sock sometimes but did not eat an ENTIRE mouth guard!

  • Oh I'm quite sure DH put it on a tissue and tossed the whole thing into the trash UGH!
  • Thanks everybody!  I'm going to talk to DH tonight about going to a doctor for it...maybe he will if it is affecting my sleep so much.  He's such a hard head though and probably won't.

     :)

  • I'm just the opposite. I have a hard time sleeping unless he's there next to me.  Unless he's snoring really loudly, of course.  LOL

He has a tendency to get up in the middle of the night, snack then sleep walk over to the couch.  When I wake up in the middle of the night to pee like I usually do, and he's not there I get antsy.  Once I see him sleeping on the couch I'll go back to bed but usually have a hard time falling back to sleep.  It's like he's my security blanket or something.  :)

Ditto!  I definitely sleep better when DH is in bed with me. It took a while for me to get used to sharing the bed with someone, but now I find it relaxing.

About the snoring thing: definitely convince DH to go to the doctor - there are a lot of home remedies as well as more advanced therapies that can reduce snoring. If it is sleep apnea or something, he should definitely talk to a specialist.

  • I have the same problem with DH. It always seems like he is snoring right in my ear. I will have to hit him (several times...such a hard sleeper) to get him to turn over. That will usually fix the problem for an hour or two. I have had him use the breathe right strips...didn't work. And I have been on his case for the past 4 maybe 5 years to go in about this. The biggest problem is his body spasms that he will have. I know everyone will occasionally have a hand or foot spasm as you are falling asleep. DH will have his whole arm or leg move (and he will never remember it). I have been smacked in the face, back of the head, kneed in the back, kicked in the legs, pinched if he has an arm wrapped around me....Thankfully I don't look black and blue from it.

  • DH only snores when he is on his back. Other than that it's not a big deal.

Both my parents have sleep apnea. They were the WORST snorers EVER. I remember one time we went on vacation with my parents and I literally could not sleep the whole weekend because my mom snored so loud. I was very cranky that weekend. Now they both have CPAP machines so it's all good.

  • Yeah, I can't sleep when DH snores.  Luckily he only does so when he's flat on his back.  So if he starts snoring I start nudging his pillow upward, which usually causes him to flip on to his side.  He snores much less now that Milo is here though, so I don't have to do it very often.  But there was a time when I didn't have to do more than lightly poke his shoulder and he would flip!

  • I am an extremely light sleeper. DH snores sometimes, but not always. I have to sleep with the fan on anyway so that drowns out most of it. If its really bothering me I will turn on a second fan, lol.

  • I have a snorer some of the time, mostly when he sleeps flat on his back...and it can get loud...besides that, the beagle is a snorer, and she sleeps between us! Haha!!

When his gets to the point where I can rest, I just poke him and he understands and turns on his side, and right away the noise stops. I totally do feel your pain...hope you find a solution that helps you guys!
