Great casual restaurants in La Jolla, CA?

Hi:

We are renting a house in La Jolla for a week when we are in San Diego for my brother's wedding.  We have a 4 year old and a 2 year old.  Any recommendations for places to eat that are good, but not super fancy.  The type of restaurant you would go to on a week night, not a big night out.

Thanks,

Kristen

  • Cafe Japengo and the Marine Room Resturant are the places which you must visit in La Jolla.

I haven't been in a while but we used to go to a great breakfast place, The Cottage I think?  I highly recommend it.  It would be fine with kids.

  • We like Brockton Villa.  It has great views and delicious food.
  • For casual, I might drive up toward UCSD (5 minutes)--in that area, Rock Bottom is a decent chain.  There is also a BJ's,which is a kid-friendly chain.  There's also a California Pizza Kitchen if you want an easy chain.

Forever Fondue might be fun for the kiddos and it is in La Jolla.

Go to the Living Room in La Jolla for coffee one day.  Yum yum yum.

  • I love both The Cottage and Cody's for breakfast.

  • Just a side-note - La Jolla encompasses a fairly large area and you probably aren't going to want to drive all over for meals.  Do you know where you're staying?  (Birdrock/UTC/La Jolla Shores/La Jolla Village)

I'll also supply a bit more restaurants since I don't agree with a lot of what's been posted and that way you can have more options.

As honey&badger posted, the UTC area is filled with mostly chain restaurants, but if you're staying there, you're probably not going to want to drive down to the Village/Shores to eat.  But there's a PF Changs, 5 Guys, Rock Bottom, TGIFridays, BJs, Daphnes, Fins, Rubios (or La Salsa...I always mix those up), Flame Broiler...

A really good option in this area for a casual, kid friendly restaurant is Sammy's - which is the San Diego version of CPK.

    La Jolla Shores has:

Piattis - another chain, but the atmosphere here is great and it's one of my fave Italian restaurants in San Diego (we're lacking in that department).  It feels like you're in someone's home.

The Cheese Shop - a sandwich shop.  We use this for beach lunches a lot.  And the kids will LOVE their imported candy selection.

La Jolla Village is where a majority of the restaurants in the area are - BUT a lot of them are not especially casual/child friendly/cheap/good. Some good choices for you are:

The Burger Lounge or Smash Burger which are basically down the street from each other.  (I prefer Smash Burger - I like their build your own burger choices)

Prep Kitchen - their sister restaurant Whisk n Ladle is also good, and we've taken infants there before no issue.  Soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta.

Michele Coulon - it's a dessert/bakery but also serves lunch.  Soups, salads, sandwiches, quiches.

    Harry's Coffee for breakfast.

Porkyland is kind of in between UTC and the Village and if you want Mexican food without leaving La Jolla this is probably your best bet.

The house is on La Jolla Farms Road, across  from the entrance to Black's Beach. What neighborhood would that be considered?

You'll actually be in the UCSD area - so a little bit of a drive to any of the above locations.

And just because you have young kids I'll throw this in - Blacks is a FANTASTIC beach - there is a glider port they can watch people take off from and it's a very popular beach for surfers. However, it is also our nude beach.  Technically I think it's illegal, but not enforced.  The people who take advantage of that are usually men in their 50s or older.  Just a head's up so you can be prepared or prepare the kids.
