I went to the dentist for my overseas screening. Well turns out my teeth are a lot worse than I thought they were.. I ended up with a 3 on the dental health scale. I need a lot work done and there is NO way we can afford to get it all done before we are supposed to leave for Guam. I'm really worried this is going to be an issue.. Can anyone tell me how this is might impact me being command sponsored?
now to vent a little:
I'm really upset that I let my teeth get this bad. I am really beating myself up about it.. I tell myself I haven't been able to afford it but looking back, I could have done it one or two teeth at a time. My parents never took us to the dentist as kids and I put off going for so long because I was scared.. Now I'm paying for it and I know it is MY fault..
At least I am getting it done now instead of waiting until my teeth were beyond repair.. I guess I've learned my lesson as far as knowing how important dentistry is.
Thanks in advance
Re: Dental problems
Is it all cavities and what not?
I was told I needed over $500 of work not covered by United Concordia. I got a second opinion and found out that all I needed was a routine cleaning which is entirely covered. I don't know how long you have gone without dental work but I had gone a little over a year an a half.
I recently went through the same sort of thing. I needed class one to get approved to go to the OCS board. I went a really long time with no insurance and didn't prioritize it. United Concordia covered $1300 and we had to come OOP for the rest, which was a few thousand. I found a dentist who accepts care credit, applied for it, got as much as I needed, and we have it 12 months 0% interest, so we didn't have to come out of savings, which was nice.
Dental is so important, and you're going to have to do it eventually. Check out carecredit.com. Good luck!
I agree with Stan. Care Credit is a wonderful thing, diffidently something to look into.
Also if you can I might go get a second opinion, just because a lot of dentists tend to say things are necessary right away and they aren't. I was told I needed to have all my fillings replaced, so I called a good friend of my mom's who's a hygienist and has been part of my dental work since I was a kid so she knows what's going on in my mouth. Anyways she said that none of my fillings are in a state where they need to be replaced and a lot of dentists say that because they want their work in your mouth and not someone elses'. Good luck!
It has been years.. As many of you know our insurance covers 1,300$ which I am using up almost immediately. After the root-canal I was told I need a few thousand dollars in fillings. I was shocked. I have no sensitivity, swelling, or pain in ANY of my teeth. The one that I need a root-canal for hurts when my mouth is really dry and when I have food stuck in it and occasionally it gives my mouth a nasty taste. So I had figured my only real issue other than that would be the two cavities I have. Well he wants me to get fillings on about 14 of my teeth.. At 185$ for tooth color and 144 for silver. We can do about 2,000 on top of what the insurance covers but much more than that and money will be an issue. I feel like some of the teeth he says need fillings.. don't. I mean I'm not a dentist so I really can't say.
Thanks for the tip on the care credit! I will look into that.
If I do have to be a level 1-2 will they just send him to Guam without me? If they do can I be sponsored after he gets there?
You can double dip for the year too. $1300 before the switch and whatever the cap is after.
I did not know they were switching to MetLife.. I will call another dentist and see if they can get me in soon and what they can do. My DH said we should be leaving may 12-15ish. I guess my biggest worry at the moment is My hubby getting sent to Guam without me and me not being able to go with him
. The work my dentist wants to do, can be done with in a year or so but he quoted me close to 4,000$ for all of it..
So not only was i terrified to even go to the dentist but now I'm paranoid he is trying to rip me off and I'm stressed about not being able to go with my DH.. this has not been a good day lol
That's the best answer ever.
I was trying to see if they can send him alone and I can meet him there in a couple months. That is if it is a problem. I tend to worry over nothing. My dentist did write on my paper that if I get the root-canal and some fillings that I would be a class 2.. Not sure how far that goes with the screening people.
I've been really stressed about this overseas screening stuff from the start, not sure why...
Thanks for the advice!
I can commiserate with your dental woes. I don't want to admit how long it's been since I've seen the dentist.
I hope it all gets worked out soon!
If you decide to go any time soon, I have the best dentist ever. For real.
I plan to. I need to get the UC sign up thing. I wonder if I can do it online. Shoot me his/her info if you could. Thanks!
I'll do it now!
Got it!
Get a second opinion. In 06 I was told I had 8 cavities after only ever having 1 in my entire life. The year before I had zero. I had no pain or swelling or any indication that I had cavities, and I questioned in my mind how this could be, but I went ahead and had all 8 of them filled any way... it has bugged me for years.... anyway, when I was moving back to San Diego I decided to look that dentist up on Yelp and there are TONS of reviews about this dentist doing unneeded dental procedures on people! Telling them they needed cavities, root canals, had infections in the gum, when there were NO problems. I contacted the dentist about getting my xrays from then because I wanted to show it to my new dentist, and they gave me the run around, 1000000 excuses as to why they couldn't give me my xrays, how they wanted to talk to my new dentist, etc etc.
So I'd definitely get a second opinion.
