46 days to race, and I'm injured. What to do?

I'm so upset by this. My hip has been acting up post-run for a couple weeks, so I rested for a few days and went to the doc yesterday. She referred me to at least one PT appointment, but basically said some people just aren't meant to run like this. I haven't done PT yet, but I tried doing an easy 2 miles in tonight (I've worked up to 8 miles so far) and was hurting by .75 miles. Argh. All this work. I have to finish this training and race.

Re: 46 days to race, and I'm injured. What to do?

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry!

You still have time though, it's not like your race is this weekend.  Go to PT and see what they say, hopefully they can get you all straightened out.  Just because your hip is hurting doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't run, it probably just means that you need to strengthen your hips, that's all.  If you google hip exercises I'm sure there are some that you can do to help, or I'm sure your PT can give you some too, obviously.

Did you make an appointment yet?  I would try to hold off on the running until your appointment if you can so you don't hurt yourself any further.

  • Stop running and go to PT!!!! You might be making it worse! Also, like PP mentioned, it might just mean that you need to strengthen your hips. I have been injured twice and both times I came back.

  • REST and ICE it.  Go to PT and see how you feel afterwards and see what the PT folks have to say.  It could help or you may be sidelined for a while.  I know it sucks.  I've been there.  I was 8 miles into my half marathon training last Spring when I effed up my knee and needed surgery.  Listen to your body.  There will always be other races if you can't do this one.
  • What is your post run stretching regimen? Do you have one?

When my hip starts to bother me it's because i've been careless with stretching. For me, it's the result of an insanely tight IT band. It usually takes a few days to work it back out and feeling good again.

I'd do PT for a few sessions, see what the say. Do some hip strengthening stuff - stretch your IT band like crazy. I also do hot hot epsom salt baths to relax my legs, and then I rolllll on my foam roller. Only stretch your legs when they are warmed up - i walk on the treadmill for 5-10 min to get them warmed up then stretch.

    Good Luck

ETA: I am not insinuating that every hip injury is an IT band. That's been MY problem.

  • I am sorry!  I am in the same boat.  My first HM is supposed to be April 22nd and I injured my hip at the end of December.  I thought I could run and kept running until I could no longer walk.  Then, I was unable to run for 8 weeks and just now, I am starting to be able to do 4 miles with no pain.  It looks like I will be walking/running this race.

Go to PT and see what happens.  If you have to sit this one out, do it.  There is no point in injuring in further.  There will be other races.
