Is 4-5 days enough? Where to stay? Fishermans Wharf area? Other activities? How far to Napa and any recs for staying there a couple of nights?
Re: San Francisco
Are you doing 4-5 days in San Fran and then a few days in Wine Country? If so, that should be fine. You can also do a day trip from San Fran to Wine Country in a day, if needed. Some wineries are only about 1 hour or so from San Fran and some are much longer. Fishermans Wharf is really a touristy area, so if that's what you're looking for than yes. It can be a hectic area, but a lot of fun too. Union Square is also nice and has lots of hotels too.
We usually stay in Union Square-Inn at Union Square. Great rates, friendly, clean, good location etc...As far as wine country-we have stayed at Inn at Sonoma and Maison Fleurie and also loved these.
As pps have said, Fisherman's Wharf is extremely touristy and a very busy area. It's fine to stay there, but just FYI. My top three choices for areas to stay in are Union Square, Embarcadero, and Fisherman's Wharf, in that order.
If you're smart about using Priceline/Better Bidding you can often find good deals on Union Square hotels. Just make sure you select Union Square East and not Union Square West.
There are plenty of things to fill 4-5 days in San Francisco alone. Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Lombard St. and Golden Gate Bridge could be done in a day. Muir Woods (redwood forest) is 45 mins. north of the city. Golden Gate Park has the Japanese Tea Garden, bison pen, Conservatory of Flowers, De Young Museum, etc. Other museums include MOMA and the Asian Art Museum. You could go see the painted ladies in Alamo Square (the houses in the background of the opening credits to Full House), explore the Castro or Haight/Ashbury, shop in Union Square or Union St. (two different areas), etc.
I'll leave the Napa recs to others.
We love San Francisco and are taking a trip there end of month. We prefer staying in Union Square, but this trip we have a toddler with us and thought Fisherman's Warf would give us more kid friendly options. It's definitely more touristy.
Alcatraz
Bay Cruise
Bike rental
Ferry Building
Palace of Fine Arts
Ghirardelli Square
Golden Gate Park (Japanses Tea Gardens)

There is soooo much to do. You can easily spend 4-5 days there, but if you wanted could hit the highlights in 2 days.
We did Wens-Sunday, flew into SFO stayed in the embarcadero area at the Hotel Vitale for 2 nights (awesome loved it) then rented a car and drove up to Sonoma for Friday and Saturday night, we used points to stay at the Marriott in Sonoma which was perfect for what we needed. We used Beau Wine tours for a day in the Russian River Valley on saturday which was amazing, we did 5 wineries and had a picnic at one of them.
I wish we had more time bc there is so much more we wanted to see.
Great ideas, thanks ladies!!
