Containers for Pastas and Rice

Would anyone be able to recommend some containers for storing pastas and rice?  I'm looking to reorganize my pantry.

On a similar note, we always seem to have a ton of crackers (three different brands for three different people).  Does anyone store these in a container?  Or do they do better staying in their box?

Re: Containers for Pastas and Rice

  • I recently got OXO containers and love them. Easy to use, secure tops, stackable, clean looking

  • My husband likes the Oxo containers too, but we only have a few because they are a bit pricy and we have other home improvement stuff we'd rather work on.

I personally like the look of glass jars with the glass hinged lid, like this

I saw a whole ton of them on sale the other day somewhere...I can't remember where, but they were in all different sizes and some of them where HUGE. I just like the look of them more and the ones I saw felt super thick and sturdy and I liked it better than the thin plastic containers that cost even more than the jars.

As for the crackers, I think it'd definitely be better to put them into sealed containers rather than keeping them in the boxes. It'd keep them from going to stale for a lot longer if they're sealed up.

You can also get decals to put on the containers that you can write on to label things--I think I've seen some on the internet or Etsy. They're re-writable too.

  • If you belong to Sam's Club, they sell a big pack of angel hair pasta that comes in a Rubbermaid type storage container. We've been using it for ages, and it didn't really cost any extra!

I have those glass jars. I love the look, but I find it very annoying that a 1 cup measure will not fit in it. So I use them for oatmeal (bought in bulk at costco), raisins (costco giant bag), cornmeal and grits. I originally wanted them for flour/sugar but those get measured in 1 cup too much and it was just really annoying. The oatmeal and raisins live on the counter because they're used every morning, and I think they look pretty nice in those jars - and a half cup measure fits in the jar just fine.

I have some square plastic containers that we store crackers and rice in. I think they're from ikea. They're nothing special to look at, but I like that they fit on the pantry shelf a little nicer than some containers. I don't think they keep the crackers longer than the box if you really seal the original box well... but if you have lazy family members who would leave the original box open, then a tupperware or canister probably would work better.

Pasta is the one thing I never put in canisters because I almost always cook a whole bag, so there's no point in it for me.

  • I LOVE these glass Burken jars from Ikea (most expensive is only $4.99 and they have a variety of sizes).  My entire pantry is full of them:

  • I agree with the previous posters about the OXO containers. They are vacuum sealed so they keep your items fresh as well as keeping the icky stuff out. I use the OXO containers for my baking stuff - brown sugar (stays in the fridge), white sugar, all purpose flour, bread flour, etc. They are also great for coffee, pasta, rice, cereal and other food items.

As others have mentioned, the OXO containers aren't exactly cheap but they are SO worth it. If you go to Bed Bath and Beyond you can use a 20% off coupon (or multiple coupons if you're buying multiple containers, you can use one on each). Or, if you have the $10 off $30 or $10 off $40 coupons for Bed Bath and Beyond that's nice too. Bed Bath and Beyond will also take competitor coupons, expired coupons, etc. so make sure you don't throw them out. I just wish they made an OXO container big enough for dog food! :o)

  • Like PP said OXO containers. FI and I were lucky enough to find them at Marshall's! We saved like $20 for a bundle package.
