We've been to Jamaica once, and Mexico several times. All of our trips have been at All Inclusives...Yesterday I got an offer through Google, a sweet deal to a place in Jamaica. So I started looking and realized that we could go back to Jamaica to a non- AI resort for MUCH less. I realize that the AI has it's perks, but I really don't believe we consumed or needed to consume several hundred dollars of food each day.
Can anyone recommend any specific places to go and specific ones to avoid? I think I am going to look into the non-AI route, just for some research and see where I can go with planning a Jamaican trip for us.
THANK YOU
Re: Jamaica Resort ideas
While it's probably not a cheaper option, we absolutely fell in LOVE with The Rockhouse in Negril, we just got back a couple of weeks ago and are already planning on going back. I definitely agree that NON-AI is the way to go in Negril, the food (the cliffs have the best restaurants) was some of the best we've ever had! Last time we went we stayed on the beach in an AI, and definitely prefer the Cliffs and will never do an AI there again. Let me know if you need any recommendations, we ate and drank our way around the cliffs.
I recommend checking out Trip Advisor, it was a huge help on this last trip and didn't steer us wrong.
What part of Jamaica will you be visiting? It seems the three main areas people stay are: Negril, Montego Bay, or Ocho Rios (this is my order of preference). For all the typical reasons, we never do all-inclusive because we prefer to go out and try the local food.
In Ocho Rios (which I don't particularly recommend to stay for people visiting if you plan to venture off your resort), we stayed at the Rooms on the Beach Ocho Rios which I really don't recommend at all. My hubby and I are not particularly picky about hotel rooms since we generally just use our rooms for sleeping/showering, but this was one of the worst places I've ever stayed in my life. It was extremely dirty and just felt overall, Yucky! The only saving grace about this place was that they had a complimentary continental breakfast, which wasn't the greatest, but free food is free food.
In Negril, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, we stayed at a budget hotel on the cliffs called Xtabi. This place had a great area for snorkeling since it's right off the cliffs and the rooms--although boutique, were clean and felt so much more comfortable than our previous gig in Ochi. They also have a restaurant on-site where you can sit and watch a beautiful sunset. The staff was great and security was awesome, making us feel safe and welcome...they go above and beyond to ensure you're enjoying your stay.
If you haven't already tried it, I recommend a restaurant on the cliffs called the Pushcart which has a great local ambience with a live band and cliffside seating. I'm vegetarian and loved their Bushman's Stew...a concoction of rice, beans, and spices--It was yummy!
