Sewing machine tension

Hello Ladies!

I am having some issues with the tension on my sewing machine. I am new to sewing and I can't figure out how to fix it. I have cleaned out the lint from by the bobbin as well as messed around with the tension dial. I just don't know if I am doing it correctly.

The top thread is very tight and the bottom thread is all bunched up because of it. Can anyone explain what I need to do and give it to me like a preschooler because I have tried following the instructions I found online and still can't fix it!

I have a Singer Simple (3116 model) that was given to me as a gift. Not the best machine but its all I have!

Re: Sewing machine tension

  • Did you take the top thread out rethread?  That's usually the first thing to do.  Be sure that the thread is going through the takeup lever and is seated in the tension disks.

The second thing is to be sure that the bobbin is in correctly (Should unwind counterclockwise).

After that, I've got nothing without seeing the machine.  GL!

  • Thank you!

I did rethread it and it seemed to help but not much.

     Bobbin was in correctly.

I gave up for the night after typing my question out and will go at it tomorrow again. Thanks again and I will retry all your suggestions in the morning!

  • Make sure your bobbin is in your machine the same way it was wound (not upside down).  For some reason my machine freaks out when it is upside down.

Also check your needle- it may be just slightly bent and double catches the bobbin thread.

  • Change out the needle and change out the bobbin. In my old singer, it would act like a douche if the bobbin was nicked in anyway. Same thing if the needle was dull or bent.

    This seemed appropriate.

My last (cheap) Brother had the same issue. I would rethread the entire thing (top AND bobbin -- so take it out of the metal case) and then I ended up switching bobbins. One of my gazillion bobbins was the issue.

  • Thank you all!

I will try all of your suggestions when I get home from work.

     Thanks again.

This is because if you put it in upside down, it will unwind clockwise.

All good advice here.  Let us know how you make out! GL!

  • I get the bunching up with my Pfaff when I?ve missed something in threading the top. Always helps me to rethread both top and bottom as other ladies have suggested. And try that a few times, sometimes it takes a couple of times, especially if you?re new to sewing and new to your machine. GL!
