Business presentation and name change

I changed my name professionally in October 2011 but IT at my work didnt initiate it until 2012.

I have a big presentation tomorrow for a big client and when I am corresponding with many of the attendees, they all keep congratulating me on my name change.  I basically have responded "thanks" or nothing but Im nervous its going to come up at the presentation tomorrow.

I want to stay professional and want to just say thanks but I feel like this client has a lot of women who are going to ask questions about a wedding, engagement, etc.  (this client is notoriously gossipy).  Any suggestions on how to address it if it comes up?  Im probably just over thinking things!

Re: Business presentation and name change

  • If they ask I would be honest... however they will probably notice you aren't wearing an engagement + wedding ring so they might realize on their own

  • I just say I decided to use my maiden name professionally. I know thats sort of a lie, but I dont like talking about my personal life at work.
  • Yea it's totally awkward! This happens to me too. I'm actually surprised so many people do this without thinking. Kind of like assuming someone with a belly is pregnant. I think if they bring up anything about marriage, I'd just politely say "oh my name didn't change because I'm getting married" or something like that.
