No, I'm not really going on a bender... although, if next week shapes up to be half as fun as I'm anticipating, I won't be held to that pledge
!
Anyway, still no final resolution, but it's looking like H and I might be moving back home alot sooner than we thought (probably this summer). Our schedules are pretty tight, but found a good deal on flights to Amsterdam (I've never been) so we're going next weekend.
Since it's such a short trip, I think we're good for activities, but would be grateful for any restaurant/pub recommendations. We'd hope to do one "nice" dinner, but would also like to check out neighborhood joint kind of places. I'm not so much with the beer and soccer (the season's over anyway though, right?), but H likes both so any good (i.e. independent) pubs would be great too.
Thanks!
Re: Amsterdam food and booze....
Ha ha! Neighbourhood joint!! Ha ha!!
Soccer season not yet over - another 6-8wks I think.
No good for suggestions though...
All I can recommend is french fries with mayo and ketchup from a street vendor.
I hate American mayo but some European mayos I really like. The Netherlands is one of them.
So so so so tasty!
Here are some good recommendations for restaurants:

If you only get ONE nice meal out, I say De Kas. Make a reservation though. It is beautiful.
As far as pubs go, the ones we u hung out at were:
Het Molenpad (off Prisengracht on the canals) http://www.goodfoodgroup.nl/molenpad.html
Gaper (off Prinsengracht on the canals) http://www.goodfoodgroup.nl/gaper.html
Golleum (off Leidesplein - awesome belgian beers) - the one in de pijp was closed most of the time we were there so if you google it, do the one
Depending on where you stay, I can suggest more but those were our three big ones.
But seriously, Groschl is Groschl (did I spell that right?). Just ride down any canal in Amsterdam and find a cozy table on the water and enjoy. It is peaceful and beautiful and sometimes crazy.
I can't remember if I put this in my other post but my two must do in amsterdam if you do nothing else....take a red light district tour with the PIC (hookers unite - even they have a union) http://www.pic-amsterdam.com/ and an Amsterdam Boat Club tour on the canals http://amsterdamboatclub.com/ (this one is kind of a different set up - it is free but accept donations, definitely donate if you take the tour! To sign up, you go to a bar on Leidseplein called Boom Chicago and they have a clipboard where you can see open times...You pick a slot and go).
OK I lied - three things. Rent a bike. Take it everywhere. It is awesome.

I used to eat here all the time - It's just a short walk from 'De Dam' and absolutely beautiful food:

Yea! Off to check the excellent links! Thank you guys very, very much!
So excited to see the canals and just bum around a little! I'm going to miss being in Europe, that's for sure!
This plus cheese- they make some damn good cheese in Holland.
I second 'de Kas' for a nice dinner, it's fun! or 'Le Garage', very very nice food, int he Museum quarter.
Gollum indeed is an excellent bar. Love it! Also in the street going by the comedy club on Leidseplein is Eijlders, very nice pub too and way less touristy and busy than all the Leidseplein pubs that are 20 yards away.
A great place for a fairly quick dinner (compared to normal in Holland) but amazing food is Sama Sebo (almost next to Rijksmuseum), it's Indonesian food, take the rijsttafel, you'll get 20 different small disches of Indonesian food for the table. Absolutely amazing!
Avoid Italian restaurants. I could give you addresses for a few that are decent, and come close to less than great restaurants in Italy, but since you live there, just don't do Italian!
Oh, and avoid Morlang (restaurant) it used to be awesome, but has become really really really crappy.

What I'm looking forward to in 2012:
Eating our way through (northern) Italy on vacation
