New runner: Tips for slowing down?

I'm doing C25K after a long period of inactivity.  I've had to push myself with each run, but I can definitely feel my endurance building.  I'm in week 5, and Saturday I'm going to do a 20 minute run with no walking.  So far the longest I've run without walking is 5 minutes.  Tomorrow I'll do 8 minute intervals, which I think will be a challenge, but doable.

Anyway, I'm trying to prepare for the 20 minute run.  I think my only chance of making it is to run as slowly as possible.  I am no speed demon, but I tend to start fast (for me) and wear myself out.

Do you do anything in particular to help keep a good pace?

  • Ah!!  So exciting...I remember when I did C25K and I was sooo nervous about that 20 minute run :)  You will do great!!  If I can't carry on a conversation I know I am going too fast and I just force myslef to slow down.  I basically "check in" with myself every so often to see if I am going too fast and then adjust accordingly.  Good luck!! :)

This! Also, maybe put some slower songs on your ipod in the beginning (if you use one) and save the faster ones for the end.

Keep a positive attitude as well! I remember that phase and telling yourself you can do it can really help!

    GL!

  • Thanks so much for the tips and encouragement!  Slower songs at the beginning is a great idea!

I am trying to be positive, but the idea of going from 5 to 20 minutes is really daunting!

This x 100000! The program has trained you for this run, trust it, it works. I'm also a c25k graduate and this run is mentally tough. I needed to remind myself that I was a "strong and capable person" when I wanted to stop. That head space is so strong, try your best to keep positive thoughts.

I also like to put some new music on my ipod before a challenging run, it gives me something to look forward to.

Good luck you will do great!

  • I agree as well with keeping up a positive attitude.  It IS daunting, but you CAN do it.  It might be challenging, but again, stay positive and you can get it done!

I always find in the winter when I have a long run to do on the TM inside that I find it SO daunting and I do not look forward to it (9 miles on a TM?  no thanks!) but I get there and I just say to myself "you can do this, you can do this!" and I am done before you know it!

  • I'm doing c25k, in week 4 now. I also have a problem of going to fast. One thing I've been trying to do is time my breaths to X number of strides to keep myself steady.

Good luck to you! I hope you report back to let us know how it went and if you have any tips.

Thanks to everyone else for your advice!

  • Thanks for all the tips and encouragement.  I am feeling really good about it now.  I keep telling myself, it may really suck, but it's only 20 minutes and then it will be over.  :)

I did my W5D2 (8 minutes running/5 minutes walking/8 minutes running) run this morning and it went well, but I was sucking wind at the end.  I am all set for Saturday.  I downloaded a bunch of cheesy power ballads and mapped out my route.  I am all set, I think.  Eek.

mamie&cc, I will definitely report back!  Good luck to you.  My W4D3 run was the hardest one so far, I think due to the giant margarita I had the night before.  I feel like weeks 4-6 are where the program really gets serious. Are you doing any cross-training?

I agree, W4 seems to start being more serious (and I'm nervous about next week). But the good news is that I surprise myself every time and I feel really encouraged. I'm going to do W4D2 tonight or tomorrow morning. I alternate between c25k, tai chi and walking.

    Good luck!
