Oz ladies what do you pay quarterly for electricity?

If you don't mind sharing a figure.

Does this include gas?  Hot water?

TIA!  I'm scared to fill out the direct debit form because I want to see the damage (and damane it will be) before they take money from my account.

  • I'm obviously not in Oz, but how are things? Are you loving it so far?

  • I am very much enjoying it.  The honeymoon phase is ending, though, and the I-need-a-damn-job phase is kicking in.  So I'm working on that.

It's a great city and I am loving the culture.  Oh yes, I'm also in the I-need-some-damn-friends mode, too. :)

I'll take that as an open invitation :)

  • We typically pay just over $300/qtr, but in winter when we have used our electric heater it once went as high as $1000. We don't have a dryer and we rarely run the A/C. In winter, after that $1000 bill we typically only put the heat on now if it gets below 13 degrees in the house. Yep, we are trying REALLY hard to keep that cost down.

And no, that does not include gas or water.

  • wise_rita, you're in Australia now? I missed something. Did you leave Norway for good?

  • About $280, but we get a 3% discount if we pay within 10 days.

No gas, we have bottled gas and right now, it's $150/bottle.  My oven and heater are gas.  One bottle lasts all summer, but in the winter we get maybe a month out of a bottle.

  • Electricity is about $350/quarter.  We use the A/C quite a bit during the summer.   It does not include gas and hot water.  Our hot water is solar so we only pay for usage.  Gas is about $60 during the summer and $200 during the winter.  I have to heat on almost every day during the winter because of DS.

Yep, we're in Australia now.  I wouldn't say we're done with Norway "for good" but the thought of staying long term was not appealing.  Plus, my visa was just not happening so DBF was able to transfer with his company to Oz.  So we've got 2 years of fun and adventure ahead of us Down Under!

Thanks for the info, ladies.  $300 seems manageable.  $1,000?  Per quarter?  Ouch!

  • We pay $0 all year and actually get about $350 a quarter in credit as we have a huge solar system. So I guess I am not much help!

$350 sounds about right a quarter for a 2 adult and 1 child household with gas hot water and heating but you need to rememebr that that will go up shortly due to the carbon tax being introduced.

You can cut costs by getting energy efficient light bulbs- you would be amazed at the difference they can make to the power bill.

  • The highest bill we ever would have had was this past quarter and that was $252.  And I was not careful with running the AC (as in, the same period last year I used 8 kWh a day and this time I used 10).

With our solar, this is the third quarter in a row I have bills of $0 and still have some credit left. Our heat comes from the A/C unit (electric) and we don't really use it all that much.  If it gets "cold" I make H go put on some socks.  Our cooking gas is in a bottle (electric oven) and that's about $150, but the bottle has lasted us a year and I cook every night.  Hot water is solar and we only pay for any booster usage.  We have a washer and dryer that I do use all the dang time.  Our bill will go down a lot once we get the dishwasher hooked up to the hot water line.

  • I know electricity is very expensive here and is due to go up. I just put some money on our bill every pay because I hated getting a huge bill! Ours is probably about $400-500. We do not have gas and we do run a pool filter in the summer but I am very cautious about wasting and try to run all the big appliances as night (off peak hours) washer, dish washer and dryer (though we try not to use the dryer often).

That's how we do it.  I send electric back to the grid during the day and they pay me $.44 for it.  Then after dark I buy it back for $.24.

That $.24 is going up another 6% in July.  When we moved here in June 2010, electric was only $.16 a kWh.

  • our last two bills in our 2 bed flat were over $1000 each - ouch

we found out it was cause we were using an electric oil heater rather than our air conditioner to heat the flat in the winter

we thought the heater would be chaper - apparently not!!!

I think it'll be a LOT cheaper now that we aren't using that - they estimated that our house bill will be around $300 or so a quarter - but we haven't had our first bill yet.....
