Bah. PF + possible tear = suck.

Had my appointment with the sports medicine doc about my heel. It's definitely plantar fasciitis. They did an ultrasound on my foot and found that the tendon is inflamed and almost twice as thick as normal. It looks like there is a small tear, too, from what he can tell.

So I've got the Strassburg sock to wear at night, and I've got to go to PT 1-2x/week for a month or so, and hope that we don't need to go further. The worst part is that my trainer said no Leg Press or calf exercises for the time being. Boo.

Anyone else ever dealt with this?  Did the sock help?

  • :(  Ugh, I am so sorry that you got bad news!!  That really sucks.
  • I really wanted to start running again. I need to get this weight off, and I was getting so much better each time last year. :(
  • Do you belong to a gym? You could take spin classes? It's great cardio and cross training for running. Sorry about your foot

  • Yep, I belong to a gym now. I've been riding the bike, and it's a good workout, but I wanted to get back to running. I'm intimidated by spin, since I don't think I'm in good enough shape yet, but maybe I'll try it.
  • Spin is great for all fitness levels!

  • That sucks :(  Hope the sock helps!  I think I may have PF too, but can't get in to the ortho till Monday.  I just started riding my bike with DD in a trailer and that was a pretty good workout (though I also really miss running). I've never tried a spin class, but sounds like that may be a good option.  If you do that, let us know how it goes - I'm thinking of trying it too!  Feel better soon!
  • I tried the sock--it put so much pressure on the side of my big toe that it drove the nail into the flesh, causing an infection.  I know it's not what you wanted to hear.  I used one of the more traditional night splints.

I tried it all, cortisone, night splint, ice, stretching several times a day to no avail.  I'm currently recovering from PF release surgery.

To give the OP hope, the Strassburg sock worked really well for me. Your toes are only supposed to be about an inch off the ground when you tighten the strap, so it should be a pretty gentle stretch. Obviously it works differently for everyone's anatomy, but for me it worked!

  • I am just a lurker but i am dealing with (recovering!) from PF too. What finally worked for me was the night splint, daily stretching of my foot and calf, icing and a some medicine: a round of prednisone and 2 rounds (3 weeks each) of an anti-inflammatory, voltaren. And getting custom orthotics which were expensive but worth it. but i also have bad bunions which is another reason my podiatrist recommended them.good luck!
  • First night with the splint wasn't bad. I had to loosen it at one point during the night because I was feeling some strange pain in my big and 2nd toes. They feel a little tingly/funny now, but I think it was the nail on my 2nd toe pushing on my toe. I'll try to trim them as much as possible. It does feel better this morning though.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I'm going to have my trainer show me the spin bike this weekend to get comfortable with it, and then I'll try to get in a class next week.
