This will be my son's first time flying when we go to Mexico in May. Any advise on how to make this trip easier on him?
Re: Flying with a toddler
Give yourself plenty of time.
Pack some new toys. Give him some on the way there and some on the way back.
Pack snacks.
Bring a change of clothes for everyone in your carry on (including the adults - you never know what will happen).
As much as it sucks to pay to check stuff, get rid of as much as you can at the check-in counter. Trying to get on a plane with a kid and too much stuff sucks more than the fees.
ditto all of the above
Also have snacks and toys in a bag you can reach at all times. Nothing sucks worse than a hungry kid when the seatbelt sign is on and you can't get your bag in the overhead bin.
Carry a LOT of snacks and drinks. Most airlines give nothing these days.
Try to get him a window seat. My kids love watching the takeoff and landing.
Ipad or portable dvd player, crayola makes the markers now that only mark on their paper and not anything else. I always get a pack of these before each trip.
Snacks, lots of things that don't stain or can be given thru a straw. We do lots of gummy dinos, cheerios, crackers, pretzels. I also bring a little insulated container with the drinkable yogurts, pre cut apple slices, grapes, etc..
Books, my son will nap on the plane but is scared at take off and landing due to the sound. I find that if I read him a book during this time he does much better. He also likes to wear my husbands Bose headphones for take off landing as it cuts the sound. I just tell the flight attendant and they are always fine with it.
Ditto on the suckers for take off and landing, those are a must. Also, I always let him pick out one thing to buy at the airport each time we leave someplace. This occupy's time and gives him something "new" to have. Most of the book stores in the terminals now have a small kids section with books, games, etc..
