Is it better to (weight loss question)
I use my fitness pal to count calories, and I used a BMR calculator/subtracting 750 calories to lose weight. My daily calorie amount is around 1700 (I am 5'8 and around 180-trying to reach 160) I also chose the lightest activity level and I eat back my workout calories. If I want to see some results/break this nasty plateau I have hit, should I cut out these things that I usually eat (but include calories for?) I have still been enjoying a serving (or two) of real ice cream per week, an alcoholic beverage (usually a beer, but sometimes a wine) per week, and I usually eat a serving of cheese/real butter (1 TBS-usually used to cook something special like asparagus in butter with garlic) a day. I sort of thought if it is something I want to keep up after I reach goal weight, then I should do it still now and count the calories, but now I am wondering. Any other ideas on how to break a plateau? Thanks!

Re: Is it better to (weight loss question)
Based on your height and weight, your BMR should be around 1600 calories, times 1.2 (Harris Benedict number for lightest activity) is about 1950 calories. If you're trying to eat 750 under that, then your daily calorie target should be 1200 (plus what you burn), not 1700. 1200 is a bit low of a target, and given you were doing 1700 you might want to compromise and try 1400-1500 and see if that helps. It's impossible to determine BMR accurately with just a simple calculator, since everyone's metabolism is a little different, but it should put you in the right ballpark and you can tweak it if you're not seeing results after a few weeks.
Anyway, about the foods - I think it's fine to eat "unhealthy" foods like ice cream, etc, as long as you stay at/under your calorie target and aren't eating them as your primary food source. Cheese/butter is always fine I think, as long as it's in moderation like you're doing. I have a weakness for chocolate, but I'm doing my best to fight it because when I eat chocolate/candy/etc instead of an apple or yogurt for a snack, it doesn't fill me up as much and then I get hungry and cheat on calories.
