Re: Edinburgh hotel recommendations please

  • I posted this on the travel board as well, and likely in the thread above, but here you go:

We were just there over Christmas and stayed at the Radisson Blu on the Royal Mile, and it was perfect. Great location, walkable to the train station, I am 99% sure there is a bus right by the train station that goes to the airport as well. You can walk to Edinburgh Castle, or walk to Princes Street for shopping.

We ate at Wedgwood one night and it was literally like a block from the hotel, and it was awesome. So, so good.

  • I stayed at the Balmoral the first time I went there and the Hilton that was the cheaper of the two Hilton options the last time I was there. The Balmoral was a beautiful hotel, the Hilton was a horrible hotel experience (but great staff, ironically). Anyway, I noticed the Radisson Blu the last time I was there as a friend had stayed there before so it was on my mind. I thought it was in a great location. It's better located than the Balmoral (and definitely better than the Hilton) right on the Royal Mile. The Balmoral is on Princes Street and is close to the Royal Mile, which is nice, but I would prefer to be on the Royal Mile. There also seemed to be more food options near the Radisson.
  • I've stayed at a Hilton too in Edinburgh, I don't know which one. It was a nice hotel but not well located.

  • I just stayed at the Raddison Blu a few weeks ago. We really liked it, very clean and pleasant, and the location is amazing! 5 minute walk from a lot of the big sights.

  • I highly recommend the Holiday Inn Cowgate.  A lot of hostels are on that road (but farther down the road) so tons of tourists/backpackers use that area as their base.  It is crazy quiet and surprisingly nice.  It's 3 minutes off the Royal Mile (no more than 7 minutes walk from the famed Radisson Blu) and the price is definitely right.

Holyrood 9A is an amazing, amazing pub right by the Holiday Inn (or again 3 minutes off the Royal Mile), great burgers there. They have Blue Moon on tap if you miss that from home.  The Chanter is another great one but it's kind of in a middle-of-nowhere (as far as tourists are concerned) location.

I highly recommend Kismot or Mother India's Cafe for Indian.  The Mitre on the Royal Mile is a good pub.  Los Cardos is close enough to Chiptole burritos to satisfy the craving of those who don't have the good stuff.  The caramel short bread bars at CQ Cafe on Grassmarket are to die for.  Go to the newsagent next door to get a little bottle of milk for the best treat ever!  I adore Biddy Mulligan's on Grassmarket for hardcore boozing.  Oink (just off Grassmarket) is a pork lovers paradise and a quick, cheap lunch.

That's all I've got for now.
