  Not sure what time you come in versus leave, but traffic in the area of the airport can be pretty sucky. 

   

  You could look at taking a cab down to Bayside Marketplace, which is pretty touristy but has shopping and restaurants. I'd just avoid trying to leave that area after around 3ish.

  The Miami airport (unless I missed something) is pretty far from Miami/South beaches and most touristy stuff so it might not pay to head out that way.

  It's about 12 miles one-way from the airport to Bayside. It's mostly a straight shot down 836 but that could be 12 miles that takes an hour if you hit it wrong.

  Bayside Marketplace is a great idea, I really liked it.  Should be fine hitting that up with an 8 hour layover.  That's totally what I'd do

  We arrive at 2pm, after a 10 hour flight so maybe we won't feel like doing anything but chilling in the lounge, but I'll keep that suggestion in the back of my head (where it likely will get lost!).

  If you want to get out of the airport but not go all the way to South Beach, I'd catch a cab to Coral Gables.  It's a very short cab ride from the airport to either Miracle Mile (a strip of upscale shops, nice-ish restaurants, and bars) or Shops at Sunset Place (small outdoor mall with typical stores and a handful of decent to nice restaurants and lounges in the neighborhood).  I used to live right in that neighborhood and both are good options to kill a few hours.  If you get in at 2pm, assume you get out of the airport by 3pm...it's maybe 15-20 minutes to either place.  You can walk around, find someplace for drinks and an early dinner, then catch a cab back to the airport around 8pm for a 10pm flight home.  This is exactly what I would do with the layover!

  I would....

  - pay up to $100 each to standby for an earlier flight if it left within two hours of my incoming flight

  - relax in the lounge (pay if I didn't have free access)

  -  try to rent a hotel room for half a day (by the airport) to sleep

  I almost had this problem... at LAX.  I was going to have a 12-hr layover when I booked my award flight (AKL-LAX-DFW), but I used expertflyer to track award seats and when seats opened up, I grabbed them asap and reduced my layover to 3 hours.
