Would you run a half 3 weeks earlier than planned?

Background - I'm currently training for my first half, the Brooklyn Half Marathon on May 19th...supposedly. Registration hasn't even opened yet and I'm getting more and more worried that I'll be shut out of the race somehow (seems like everyone in NY wants to do this race!). I'm pretty annoyed by the NY Road Runners (for many reasons, not just this) and part of me wants to say forget it, but I'm already gearing up for a spring half and Brooklyn is my only local option for May/June because there are a lot of events I have going on most other weekends.

Enter...another half-marathon happening in Brooklyn from another NY running organzation. It's on April 28th. It might fill up pretty soon so I need to make a decision.

Pros - Flat course, prettier course, nice way to celebrate turning the big 3-0 the day before, I would avoid half training in early May when I'll be out of town and have major family events to attend. Possibly better (read: less hot) weather conditions.

Cons - Not too familiar with this organization so I don't how how well-coordinated the race will be; at least with NYRR, the races are pretty well-coordinated. Don't know how I feel about running a half with only 300 runners at most. I'd have to speed up my training.

My training is going very well so far and I'm in good shape. I'm running a 15K on April 1st and that would be my longest distance to date - then I figure I can run 10, 11 and then 12 miles the following 3 weekends.

So would you run the 4/28 half?

Re: Would you run a half 3 weeks earlier than planned?

  • Oof.  Tough call, yo.  If you decide you're okay with doing a smaller race, I think you could give it a shot.
  • Well, NYRR road races are getting more and more congested, so at least there won't be a million people in my way for this race! I honestly think I'm conditioned enough already to run a half in 6 weeks. It's just that I don't know what to expect with this organization that I just have no familiarity with - will there be enough fluids and toilets throughout the course, for example? They seem pretty responsive so I suppose I could always just ask them for more specifics - all I know already is that about 100 people have signed up already, and if NYRR keeps jerking people around about the Brooklyn Half, there might be more people thinking about this other race.

    Thanks!

  • I say with the mileage you have planned you will definitely be ready to run the earlier race.  Good luck!!  My first Half was an amazing experience, I hope it is the same for you :)

P.S. Love your siggy pics :)  We are Mets/Giants fans in our house, too!

  • I'm also annoyed at NYRR.  I want to sign up too, and am just going to get back into my longer long runs as if I was going to run Brooklyn since it's 2 months away already!  It sold out in less than 2 days last year, so I'm hoping I can get in there before it's closed.  I follow them on FB so I'll hopefully see right when they post that it's open!

  • I think it can be done. I ran my first race (a half) a couple of months into doing C25K. Probably not the best idea but I took my time with it and made it without injury.

What I worry most about is getting ready to register only for there to be technical issues on the registration page and missing out - if last year sold out in less than 2 days, this year should sell out quicker thanks to way more anticipation!  Just don't know if I want to deal with the aggravation, particularly since I didn't get into the NYC Half happening this weekend. Plus, there have been tech issues during registration for several other races with nowhere near the anticipation. Also, The fact that they are sending emails to NYC Half runners saying there are ways to raise money to guarantee a BK Half spot means that even NYRR knows it may be a tough race to get into.

Im leaning more and more on registering for the 4/28 half to avoid any issues - at least I know I'll have a half to run since the last thing I want is to train for a half that I can't run! I will decide later today. Thanks all!
