Juicers anyone?

Besides watching 'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead' this weekend, I've always been interested in the juicing concept. I have no desire to do any sort of cleanse/fast but I'd like to incorporate a juiced meal (or have the juice be part of one since I am pregnant) into my daily/weekly routine. Plus I've been eating like complete crap the past few months and I really need to focus on getting better food in me and I think this would help.

Having said that does anyone own a juicer that they could recommend? I'm looking for something that is pretty much the biggest bang for the buck but actually turns hard vegetables into JUICE and not MUSH. Also, any recipes you could let me know about would be appreciated as well!

Re: Juicers anyone?

  • I bought the Jack LaLanne juicer 3 weeks ago and it broke already this morning!  I only juice for breakfast and I miss it.  All the reviews said that Breville is the best (but they were out of stock when I wanted to start so I bought the LaLanne).  I will be returning the LaLanne tonight and ordering a Breville.

Here's my morning juice recipe that has made me feel amazing all day:

    6 leaves kale

    2 cups spinach

    2 apples

    4 stalks of celery

    1" of ginger root

    GL to you!

  • I'm sad to hear about your Jack LaLanne Juicer breaking! We just brought one and so far I'm really liking it.

We've been making lots of cucumber, apple, spinach drinks lately. BF is making a apple, carrot, ginger one right now.

I forgot to mention that there's also a 1/2 cucumber in this too.

Yeah, I really liked it until this morning.  It made good juice!  Maybe it was just a bad one and hopefully you won't have issues.  I took it apart and reassembled it 12 times this morning just to make sure it was really broken.  I've had it not start a few times before b/c the blades weren't in the exact right position, but it always worked on assembly #2. Today, not so much.  Handling disappointment at 6am is not my strong suit...

  • I have a Breville and I love it.  No offense to the JL lovers but Brevilles seem to be a bit more "sturdy" and perform better, esp on getting juice from green leafy vegetables.  JL's seem a bit cheaply made.

As for juice itself, my favorite combo is kale (any variety), celery, 1/2 a lemon and 1 apple.  When I first started making it, I only put about 2 kale leafs in it but now I put 1/2 of a "bunch" to a whole "bunch" in.  Sometimes I add a 1/2 a cucumber, maybe some ginger, cilantro, spinach... whatever different things I have on hand but this is usually my "base" combo that I can't go wrong with.

    I also like carrot-apple-beet juice.

I've tried random combos, some of which tasted good and some of which that were repulsive.  So now I tend to stick to what I know works  ;)

Breville is on order from Amazon.  Can't wait to try it out.  :)  I'm going to try some of your juice combos.
