Running with Water Bottle (dumb Q maybe)

Hello - I am a newbie to this board but I've been lurking a bit and posting more.  Anyway I saw a post about running with a water bottle and this had never occurred to me.  (I live in Minnesota where it's typically not a problem to run when it's not too hot out and in the winter I run on the treadmill)

Anyway, from those who have experience running with a water bottle - do you find the belts or the handheld bottles (or something else) better?  Also I am assuming you can just buy them at a sporting goods store?

Re: Running with Water Bottle (dumb Q maybe)

  • For my longer runs over 6 miles I use my Camelbak and for shorter runs less than 6 miles I use my handheld.  Both are great!  I don't even notice the bottle in my heand and the Camelbak doesn't bounce around.  In the summer it is a must for me to have water at all times!!  For the really long runs I use a mix of water/gatorade.  Hope that helps! :)

E.T.A. Forgot to mention that, yes, you can get everything at a sporting goods store!

  • For anything under 6-7 miles I usually don't take water (unless it is super hot) I just hydrate well before.  Over 7 miles I have a hydration belt with 4 bottles.  It bounces a little but it doesn't really bother me too much.

  • I have a handheld and I hate it. Running with it feels awkward and uneven and makes my shoulder hurt. I am going to switch to a belt.

  • I have, I think, five different hydration options, haha.  I like my Fuel Belt Sprint 10oz a lot for shorter runs.  It's not awkward and works well.  For longer runs I prefer my Amphipod RunLite 4 bottles

Everyone likes something different.  I don't take water for runs under 6-7 miles, and for 10Ks I don't bring water (but I do take water at stations). But for long runs I prefer a camelback.  I have an amphipod belt but I never really liked it and fidgeted with it throughout the run.  The camelback is nice and secure and I don't mind it, but others might. This is the one I have and I really like it:

  • I started with a hand held and switched to a belt for marathon training.  I now prefer the belt.  I like that I can fill 2 bottles with gatorade and 2 with water.
  • Im so glad you asked this! (& I don't think its a dumb Q!) Im in WI & was barely into C25k when it got hot last summer, so I never had this issue...except once when it was brutually hot & humid & I ran w/a water bottle, but I bet I wasn't even up to running a full mile w/o stopping at that point...

But now Im up to 5-6miles (haven't been increasing my mileage until now), & even in this 60* weather Im getting parched. I loathe the idea of wearing a belt w/bottles, I have no torso & an as$, so having that bouncing on my butt the entire run would drive.me.crazy! I was thinking along the lines of a handheld, or a Camelbak, but I thought I would hate a Camelbak, since running w/a backpack sucks (I have done this), but, Im assuming a Camelbak would feel entirely different then a regular backpack...since its smaller, compact & would fit more snugly to your body. I am/was concerned about the sloshing/shifting of the liquid back there, but I no longer think that given what PP said about it.

I think I might pick one up this weekend! So, thanks for posting! Big Smile

  • I run with water or gatorade for anything over 8 miles.  I prefer a handheld because I don't like things bouncing on my waist, but it's just my personal preference.
  • I run with a fuelbelt with 2 10oz bottles for anything over 4 miles (I love to drink water!)
  • I prefer a belt usually, just b/c I don't really like having anything in my hand when I run.  That being said, I do have a handheld bottle that I use occasionally.

I think it's just a personal preference, you just have to try several kinds and see what works best for you.  The belt took a couple of runs to get used to, and some experimenting on where to place it (meaning higher or lower on hips) but once I figured that out, I didn't even notice it was there.

  • I used to wear by my Fuel Belt but now that I am pregnant I can't stand wearing it.  I love my Nathan's sprint 10oz bottle.

It literally fits like a glove, so comfy.  I wish they made this style in a 16 or 20oz.  I just make stops to fill it up when I am on longer runs where I need more than 10oz of water.

  • I dislike running with a belt because it pushes on my bladder, I much prefer my hand held.  I got it from amazon.

Totally agree, that's the only thing I find frustrated, that it doesn't hold that much and I sometimes have to find a place to stop and fill it.?
